Karen Chaney

(From Hedge-Lewis-Goodwin Funeral Home)

Karen Faye Chaney, 81, of Purcell, Missouri, a cherished mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, aunt and friend, passed away peacefully on Sunday morning, February 11, 2024, at Joplin Gardens in Joplin, Missouri, following a recent decline in health.

Born on March 5, 1942, in Webb City, Missouri, Karen's life was a testament to the love and care she bestowed upon her family and the community that she held dear.

She was a lifelong resident of Purcell, Missouri, and was a graduate of Alba High School, class of 1960. On August 5, 1960, she married Thomas Glenn Chaney, and together they embarked on a journey filled with love, laughter, and the joy of raising a family.

Karen's professional life was as diverse as it was long-standing. She dedicated 17 years to Pillsbury in Joplin. Later, she and her husband took a leap of faith and became entrepreneurs, owning and operating the Wooden Nickel Tavern in Purcell for over two decades. Their establishment became a local staple, not just for its refreshments and fare, but also for the sense of community and friendship that Karen fostered within its walls.

Beyond her professional endeavors, Karen was a woman of many interests. She was a wonderful cook, whose dishes were the highlight of family gatherings and a true expression of her love and care. Her passion for yard work reflected her appreciation for nature and the simple pleasures of life, such as drinking coffee and watching the birds that visited her garden. These moments of tranquility were among her most cherished.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Otto and Alma Mae (Neece) Sidenstricker, and her seven siblings, Donna, Mildred, Dale, Jerry, Otto Jr., Rex, and Gary.

Her memory will be lovingly carried on by her twin sons, Tom Chaney and Tim Chaney, and Tim's wife, Vicki, both of Purcell. Her legacy also lives on through her four granddaughters, Julian Foster and husband, Thomas; Lauren Hughes and husband, Kyade; Kaitlin Littlefield and husband, John Paul; and Sara Chaney and fiancé, Alberto Gongora. Karen was also a proud great-grandmother to seven great-grandchildren, with the eighth expected to arrive soon: Charlotte, John Timothy, Madeline, James, Alexander, Hudson, and Chaney. She is also survived by her two siblings, Bonnie Robinson and Howard Sidenstricker, both of Webb City, and a host of nieces and nephews who will miss her dearly.

A visitation will be held on Friday evening from 5-7:00 p.m. in the chapel of Hedge-Lewis-Goodwin Funeral Home in Webb City, Missouri. Private committal services will be held at Friends Cemetery in Purcell at a later date.
