Mickey Mitchell
(From Parker Mortuary)
Michael (Mickey) Dean Mitchell passed away at home surrounded by his family Wednesday, May 30, 2018. He was born June 1948 in Columbia, South Carolina. He was the son of Lt. Col. John S. and Zelma L. Mitchell of Joplin who preceded him in death. The Mitchell family made their home all over the United States and Puerto Rico until Lt. Col. John S. Mitchell retired from the army and settled in Joplin in 1959. Mickey graduated from Joplin Senior High School in 1966. He served in the Missouri Army National Guard, 1969-1975 and received a commendation as a rifle sharpshooter. After working in various positions and states, he came back home to Joplin in 1973 and worked as a purchasing agent for Oak Hill Osteopathic Hospital. He married Beverly Bohm, the love of his life in September 1974. Mickey was a 7-Eleven convenience store franchisee owner on south main for a few years.
In 1976 he became Administrative Assistant at Oak Hill. In 1980 he received his Bachelor of Science in Business Administration at Missouri Southern State University and became Director of Planning and Development, Physician Recruitment and Retention at Oak Hill. During that time, he recruited over 60 physicians to the Joplin area. Many fine and well-respected physicians he recruited still practice here in Joplin and the surrounding area today. Mickey, in conjunction with Dr. Larry McIntire, a recruited physician, began the Ear Nose and Throat residency program at Oak Hill. This later laid the groundwork in Dr. Larry McIntire's relentless pursuit of a medical school in Joplin, which is now a reality with the Kansas City University medical school opening last year in 2017.
Along with Dr. Paul Swanson, Mickey was co-owner of Sgt. Pepper's Nightclub in Galena, Ks. and T-Birds in Joplin as well as a concert promoter. In 1993-1994 he served as Oak Hill's interim President/CEO until a permanent replacement could be recruited. In 1994-1995 he served as Vice President of Professional Services. While at Oak Hill Hospital, Mickey was involved in many civic organizations and fund raisers, too numerous to list here. Among them, he was on the Building Fundraising Committee for the Joplin South Family Y, past President and Board Member of the Optimist Club of Joplin, and a member of the Rotary Club in Joplin and Nevada. In cooperation with members from area hospitals, Freeman and St. John's, he was one of the founding Board members of the Joplin Emergency Medical Service (ambulance) which later became known as Metro Emergency Transport Service and served 27 years on this Board of Directors, 10 of those years as Board President. In similar cooperation with area hospitals, he was also a founding Board member of the Community Blood Center in Joplin. Mickey also served many years as an Officer and Board Member of the Cerebral Palsy Center and on the Board of Directors of Joplin Area Chamber of Commerce.
Mickey began post graduate studies in Health Care Administration at Southwest Baptist University. He became a Graduate of the American College of Health Care Executives in 1995. In addition, his professional memberships included American Hospital Association, Society for Healthcare Planning and Marketing, American Osteopathic Hospital Association, College of Osteopathic Healthcare Executives, Missouri Osteopathic Hospital Association, Missouri Osteopathic Medical Educational Consortium, and Healthcare Financial Management Association. In addition to memberships he also served on the Board of Directors for some of these organizations.
In 1995 Oak Hill and Freeman Hospital merged forming under the legal name as Freeman-Oak Hill Health System. During the transition Mickey became Vice President of Operations for Freeman Health System. In 1996 he became the Executive Director of Regionalization for Freeman. During this time, he became familiar with physicians throughout the region and also served on the Children's Miracle Network Hospitals golf tournament fundraiser committee for 11 years. In 2010 he became the Director of Business Development for Heartland Behavioral Health Services in Nevada, Mo. and served on the Board of Directors until his passing. Mickey made a lasting impact upon the employees of Heartland. In addition to his leadership in the area of business development and physician recruitment, Mickey established a child and adolescent psychiatric residency rotation in conjunction with Freeman-Ozark Center of Joplin. Mickey had a heart for children, especially those who are most vulnerable to mental illness. Until his health declined in 2017 he was on the Board of Newton County Mental Health and National Alliance on Mental Illness for several years. He understood health care and mental health care went hand in hand in providing good quality care for all.
He is survived by his wife in marriage of 43 years, Beverly, a daughter Andrea Horton and husband Shawn of Joplin, a son John Mitchell of Joplin, a daughter Christine Kallio and husband Brad of Minneapolis, Minnesota. Survivors also include four grandchildren, Nicholas and Christopher Horton, Carson and Logan Kallio, a brother Steve Mitchell and wife Jane of Carl Junction, Mo., a sister Nora Lou (Nunie) Burtchaell of Atlanta, Georgia, and many beloved nieces and nephews. Mickey was always very friendly and had his hand extended to give a warm handshake to kings and paupers alike. He would always go out of his way to help a stranger, friend or family member with their needs. During Mickey's early childhood he was bilingual in Spanish and English, often interpreting Spanish to his mother while in Puerto Rico. When it came time to translate a bad report from his daycare worker, the translation to his mother was quite a different one. Mickey will truly be missed by his family, friends, and co-workers. Mickey was baptized at St. Mary's Catholic Church on Easter Sunday in 2001 by Father Justin.
Memorial Mass is planned for 2:00 p.m. Monday at Saint Mary’s Catholic Church, with Father Justin Monaghan as celebrant. The family will receive friends Sunday from 5:00 – 7:00 p.m. at Parker Mortuary. Julie Gelpke
(From Bath-Naylor Funeral Home)
After a lifetime of selfless service to others, Julie Ellen Gelpke embraced her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ in His Kingdom on May 24th, 2018. Julie was born on March 11, 1962 in San Antonio, Texas. She attended Winston Churchill High School, where her friendly, outgoing personality and phenomenal speaking talent resulted into her being elected as her senior class vice-president. Julie was an avid reader, an animal lover, and a devoted friend to those blessed with knowing her.
Following graduation, Julie worked for several years as a police dispatch officer in Balcones Heights, Texas. After moving to Kansas, Julie attended Pittsburg State University, earning her degree in Sociology with an emphasis in diversity. Julie was an activist who fought for human and civil rights for all, and she fearlessly called out injustice or discrimination wherever it was found. Julie’s uncanny ability to employ humor in any situation gave precious relief to countless others for whom battles had taken their toll.
Julie used her talents to affect change as a membership leader for the National Organization for Women, as a public speaker endorsing progressive candidates, and as an organizer of phone-drives to legislators on countless issues; however, the majority of her contributions were behind-the-scenes, direct involvement in the lives of those in need, such as providing transportation to a needy family, giving love and support to a young woman facing racism, and helping others find much needed resources related to gender-identity differences. Julie was a tireless advocate who did these things without claiming credit or compensation.

Gary Neece
(From Floral Haven Funeral Home)
Gary Alan Neece, 51, retired Tulsa Police sergeant and author of two novels, died Friday, approximately two years after being diagnosed with brain cancer.
Gary was born Jan. 25, 1967, in Kansas City, Missouri, to George and Sylvia Treece Neece. He graduated from high school in Kearney, Missouri, and achieved a 4.0 grade point average while earning his bachelor’s degree in psychology, with a minor in criminal justice, at Missouri Southern State University. He began his more than 24 years of service with Tulsa Police Department during the 1992 TPD police academy. He graduated among the top of the class in January 1993.
Gary was described by his supervisors as being a very motivated officer, who often led his shift in serving warrants and making DUI arrests. He was praised for conducting thorough investigations, and his reports were always well written – something that could have been expected of a future published author.
Gary always took time in dealing with the citizens he encountered on calls, treating them with dignity and respect. He especially kept the victims’ feelings in mind. As such, he was somewhat of an ambassador for TPD by presenting a professional image of his department.
On a cold night in February 1996, Gary and two other on-duty officers, Paul Downe and James Rogers, were dispatched to the Arkansas River, where two juveniles were trapped among large chunks of floating ice. Despite the 20-degree temperature, the three plunged into the icy waters without safety equipment and pulled the two youngsters and the mother of one of them to shore. The two boys later died in the hospital, while the officers were treated for exposure and released. “Considering the frigid conditions and the risk of personal injury,” Cpl. L. Woollen successfully nominated the officers for the TPD Medal of Valor.
Gary received numerous Department Commendations, including one from then Sand Springs Chief Daniel Bradley for dedication and professionalism. That case involved a heavily armed man holding his children and an elderly relative hostage for several hours.
In 1997, he developed a plan to work with at-risk youth who were using their unplanned time to plague the neighborhood with crime. The crime-rate drop and improved quality of life for neighbors was attributed to Gary’s plan and leadership.
In 2007, Gary received a Department Commendation for his response to a domestic altercation that could have been deadly. An armed suspect had his wife and three children barricaded inside an apartment at gunpoint. Gary and a fellow officer worked feverishly to break through the wall adjacent to the apartment, which was hampered by double offset studs too tight for an easy escape. With great determination and a few tools, he broke through and created an opening large enough for the victims to flee.
He received another Department Commendation that same year for his heroic actions during a hostage attempt. He provided containment and attempted to negotiate with the suspect, who later died.
In 2016, Gary underwent surgery at St. Francis Hospital in Tulsa. That happened to be the site where just two years earlier he witnessed a suicide. The victim’s wife told the police chaplain, “These policemen are some of the most wonderful people I have ever known.” The chaplain said, “It says something when a family can step out of their catastrophic grief and insist the police officers present be commended for their
assistance.”
Gary was eager to give of his community and never hesitated to volunteer for special projects. For example, he “rang the bell” for hours during the annual Salvation Army’s Red Kettle Drive before Christmas. He was a member of Faith United Methodist Church.
Gary said he drew inspiration from his his time as supervisor of the undercover vice/narcotics unit of TPD’s special investigations division to write his first book, “Cold Blue.” His second book was “Sins of Our Fathers,” and he was writing his third book prior to his illness.
Gary married Sonya Foos on November 28, 1992, in Webb City, Missouri, and she survives at the home in Broken Arrow, Oklahoma. He is also survived by two daughters, Julia Neece and Ally Neece; two sisters, Waunita Hansen and her husband Richard, Sidney, Nebraska, and Susan Shaul and her husband Tom, Liberty; two nieces, Chelsy Shaul and Celeste Brauer; three nephews, James Hansen, Zack Shaul and Zeb Hansen; in-laws, Ann and Bob Foos, Webb City; brother-in-law, Jake Foos, Overland Park, Kansas. In 2017, he was preceded in death by both of his parents, George and Sylvia Neece, of Liberty.
Throughout Gary’s medical ordeal, he and his family have been grateful for the vast amount of support, encouragement and prayers from Gary’s fellow officers, Sonya’s fellow staff members at Darnaby Elementary School, members of Faith United Methodist Church and countless other friends and well-wishers in the community. They are especially thankful for the Clarehouse hospice facility and its caring
professional and volunteer staff.
A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, May 26, 2018, at Faith United Methodist Church, 7431 E. 91st St., Tulsa. The Rev. Charla Gwartney and Police Chaplain Danny Stockstill will officiate, with a salute by the Tulsa Police Honor Guard. Memorial contributions may be made to Disabled American Veterans or
