He was baptized October 26th, 1924 and confirmed April 10th, 1938 at Zion Lutheran Church. He later joined Immanuel Lutheran Church in Lockwood actively serving on the finance committee, on the building committee when the church was built and as an elder.

Harold’s passion was farming. He dedicated hours of service to his community and served as president of the board for the MFA in Lockwood for many years. He loved watching his crops and cattle grow. He was a man that believed in a strong work ethic that he passed on to his children. It was in those hours spent with him on the farm that molded all of us into who we are today. Many of Harold’s happiest moments were watching his grandchildren play ball (and win!), four wheeling with the family, feeding the cattle and afternoons on the lake. Family trips were often sparked by a rain storm leaving only moments to get suitcases packed and loaded. His children knew that if he held a different opinion from them he would often say “You must know” and we all knew what that meant! He loved telling stories from the early days of Dade County, told to him by his grandfather, which he would share on Sunday afternoon drives. He was a loving husband, father and grandfather.

Harold is survived by Jean Schnelle, his wife, and children Kent (Donna) Schnelle, Elaine (David) Coose, Greg (Germaine) Hall, Mark (Sue) Hall, Jane (Steve) Mayden, Joyce (Bob) Torris, Keith (Tammy) Hall, Dwight (Amanda) Schnelle.

Leslie Gann

(From Parker Mortuary)

My mother was the most loving, compassionate, and genuine person I’ve ever met. She radiated warmth to everyone she came in contact with. She was big on volunteering and was in charge of a club at Joplin South Middle School that encouraged kids to volunteer within the community. She often volunteered with the Salvation Army, Ronald McDonald House, Joplin Humane Society, and many more. She was also incredibly passionate about animals and would do just about anything for them. My dad was always a good sport about the countless animals she would bring home.

My mother was a woman with many talents, such as teaching, gardening, and crafting. She was extremely active with scouting and was a dedicated scout leader. She was loved by those close to her. She was a goofball, with a dark sense of humor, that shocked many. For example, she said she was pregnant after multiple tests came back with a false positive when she was diagnosed with cancer, to “lighten the mood.” What made my mother so special besides her unusual sense of humor, was her overly accepting, and loving heart.

Although she came from a big family, she still took it upon herself to adopt many friends into the family. She had enough love to go around, and always tried to stay in touch with even the most distant of relatives. She was unbelievably patient. For example, she was able to go on a roadtrip with two teenage girls for ten hours one way so that we could go to a concert and visit a friend, without complaint. Another testament to her patience was her incredible ability to answer non stop questions from her three year old granddaughter without ever letting on that she was perturbed. Perhaps the most obvious example, was raising my brother and I, as we were not easily managed with our extra curricular activities such as band and sports which she was always very involved.

She kept a brave face until the end, and never let on just how much pain she was feeling, in an attempt to protect us. In fact, if you asked her, she was never in pain, she was just “uncomfortable.” In conclusion, my mother was loved deeply by those that knew her, and cherished by her entire family. This is a very difficult loss for all of us, but this heartbreak can be endured because she isn't suffering anymore. Her legacy will live on through the lives of all of her friends and family whom she was able to positively impact in one way or another.

Funeral services for Leslie R. Gann, 49, will be Saturday, September 29, 2018 at 1:30 pm for the viewing and 2:00pm for service, at the Christ Church of Oronogo Student Ministries North building. Mrs. Gann passed away Wednesday September 18, 2018 at her residence. Survivors include her husband Terry Gann, daughter Cathline Gann, son Michael Gann (Melissa), mother Katherine Bland, sisters Marion Pink (Brian), Jackie Doke (Jason), brothers William Shipley, Elvin Leslie Bland II (Cara), Jerry Bland (April), Dennis Bland (A.J.), grandchildren Jonathan Gann, Kaitlynn Duggan, Leslie Gann and several nieces and nephews. Mrs. Gann is preceded in death by her father Elvin Leslie Bland I. Mrs. Gann was a native of Missouri and a resident of Oxford Al. She was a member of Meadowbrook Baptist Church who was passionate about her faith. She was a very giving person always putting others first. She loved gardening, reading, and loved her pets. She was a service oriented person always volunteering for various organization in the Community. She was a loving wife, mother and grandmother who will be greatly missed.

Archie Brewer

(From Housh-Goodwin Funeral Home)

Archie Norman Brewer, long-time Carthage area resident and dairyman/farmer, died of age-related illnesses early Saturday morning, September 22, 2018 at his home northeast of Carthage. He was 99.

Archie and his wife, Irene, moved their farming operation from Norway, Kan. to County Road 100 in 1961. They named the property Maple Lane Farm and their historic home became the gathering place for an immediate family now numbering 66. Irene died in 2015. Four of Archie’s seven children were with him when he died. One son, Mark, of Carthage, had died only hours earlier of injuries suffered in a car accident on Tuesday.

Archie had remained interested in his farm, now 240 acres. He enjoyed his frequent visitors, and his competitive nature helped sustain him. Earlier this month, he beat two of his children in games of spades. But a few days ago playing became too difficult and after losing a hand to his son Joe, Archie said, “I’m all out of play.”

Archie was born on September 12, 1919 in the farmhouse of his parents, Joseph and Norma Brewer of rural Concordia, Kan. He was a graduate of Concordia High School and attended Kansas State University in Manhattan, Kan. In the mid-1960s, Archie built a 22-acre lake at Maple Lane Farm, rejecting warnings of so-called experts that it would not hold water. It has. Well stocked with bass, crappie and catfish, it has long been popular with fishermen for $1 a day. Archie had expanded his farming operation to about 1,500 acres by the early 1980s, working alongside Dale Johnson of rural Oronogo, an employee who became a close friend. Besides milking about 160 Holstein cows, he had a beef herd and thoroughbred Appaloosa horses. He and Irene enjoyed traveling to tracks to see their horses run, including trips to New Mexico, Florida and New York. Archie was active in his community, helping start the Center Point 4-H Club.

After his marriage to Irene, daughter of a Lutheran minister, Archie became a devoted and active Lutheran, and belonged to Good Shepherd Lutheran Church. He was an active dairyman and served on the national board of American Milk Producers, Inc. He was a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars, having served in the Army Air Corps during World War II. He went to flight school, but suffered an appendicitis attack shortly before he was to solo. Army regulations kept him from rescheduling that flight. He was deployed to India, where his main task was setting the timing mechanism on bombs. Archie served on the Norway, Kan., school board and was the second farmer in Republic County to put in an irrigation system.

Survivors include six children, Norman (Judy) of Bethesda, Md., Vallie Cook of Carl Junction; Renie (Doug) Wilson of Chicago; Mary Ellen (Phil) Morgan of Columbia,Tenn., Joseph of West Plains, Mo., and informally adopted son Michael “Butch” Taft (Charlene) of Harbor City, Calif., Julie Winter of rural Carthage, soulmate of Mark; 21 grandchildren, 31 great-grandchildren and three great-great grandchildren. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to Good Shepherd Lutheran Church or VFW post 534 in Joplin, in care of the funeral home.

Funeral services are 2:00 p.m. Friday, September 28, 2018 at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, 8978 County Lane 170, Carthage. Visitation will be from 6-8:00 p.m. Thursday evening at the church. Arrangements are under the personal care and direction of Housh-Goodwin Funeral Home in Sarcoxie, MO.

Lois Jones

(From Parker Mortuary)

Lois I. Jones 83. Surrounded by family, Lois passed away peacefully to begin her new journey with the Lord on Wednesday, September 19, 2018. She blessed the world and her parents Leo and Nellie Buchanan with her arrival on March 2, 1935 in Springfield, MO.

She grew up with four brothers; Gordon, Ray, Wendell and Charles, and two sisters Wilma and Alice. She excelled in school and was Valedictorian of her class. Loving to sing, she often teamed up with her sisters singing Alto. She married her high school sweetheart Harold Dean and together they had 5 children that she cherished, (even if they were always testing her and keeping her on her toes). She was a fantastic cook and always made sure that no one went away from the table hungry.

She loved the simple life and her love of music never ended. After moving with her family, to Las Vegas, NV in 1969, she often found herself unwinding for the day by partaking in a Las Vegas lounge show. Her absolute favorite was Willie (Nelson) and Waylon (Jennings). She would watch and listen to them, seated just a couple feet away and for a two drink minimum, it was as if they were singing only to her with the intimate lounge show setting. Besides country music, she also loved classical and opera and was fortunate enough to see Pavarotti in concert twice.

While it was music that got her through the best and the worst of times in her life, her real TRUE LOVE was books. Her incredible thirst for knowledge was always present, which in turn led to a collection of books that would make even the biggest library envious. Some she read, some she didn't and some she just skimmed through, but nevertheless, her love for books was obvious. They gave her comfort and she could tell you what each book was about and even tell you a little history about each author. A memory that will NEVER be forgotten was the smile on her face and the laughter in her heart every time she would tell her four remaining children, "Now, be sure to split all my books evenly between you kids".

She worked many years as a dispatcher for the Henderson, NV Police Department receiving numerous awards and accolades for her service. Upon her retirement she moved back to her roots in Missouri where she lived out her final years in the country. Even at the age of 83, it was common to see her riding around 10 acres on the back of her zero turn mower and it was nothing for her to walk along, barefoot in the grass, and yell...."Here's another one", as she bent down to pick ANOTHER 4-leaf clover.

She was preceded in death by her parents Leo and Nellie Buchanan. Brothers; Gordon, Ray and Charles Buchanan; sister Wilma Tuckness and youngest son John Jones, along with ex-remained friend Harold Jones and Grandchildren Haley Jones and Shellie Hulet.

She is survived by her daughters Cathy Jensen (D.C.) and Melanie Nelson, sons Bart Jones (Bonnie) and Kevin Jones (Holly). Sister Alice Serrano (Mel) and Brother Wendell Buchanan, along with 9 grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren. There will be no service scheduled at this time. Her favorite season was Spring and there will be a Celebration of her Life scheduled at a later date.

She always had a rescue pup or kitty in her life. She leaves behind 6 fur babies; Noah, Jillie, KitKat, Midnight, Sammie and Sadie. It would be a Blessing if you might consider a donation to your favorite animal shelter or rescue in all of their honor.
