Jesse Carpenter

Jesse Arlie Carpenter, 97, passed into the loving arms of our Lord on Sept. 14, 2018, at the Missouri Veterans home in Cameron, MO. Arlie, as he was known to most people, was born on April 28th, 1921, to Jess F. and Nora E. Carpenter in the town of Mulberry, KS.

After graduating from Arcadia, KS. High school, he worked in the aircraft industry for 2 years then enlisted in the U.S. Army Air Force on September 9th, 1942. He was a waist gunner/flight engineer on a B-24 Liberator bomber assigned to the 8th Air Force, 392nd Bomber Group which was based in London, England. During his time in London, he met his future wife of 57 years, Jean Vincent-Minter, who after her service in the Royal Air Force, was a volunteer for the American Red Cross.

After the war, he settled in Kansas City, KS. and worked in the retail lumber business for 38 years as a building materials estimator and purchasing agent. Arlie enjoyed coaching little league baseball and had two championship teams in his tenure as coach. He was very active in the Boy Scout movement and earned two hiking merit badges taking both his sons on 70 miles of hikes around Kansas City. He also loved going to their lake house on Pomme de Terre lake near Hermitage, MO.

Upon retirement in 1984, he and Jean hit the road for about 10 years as full-time RV'ers traveling to almost 40 states and Canada. After Jean passed on in 2002, he moved to Joplin, MO., where he ran into a former high school sweetheart, Reba Craig, at an Arcadia high school reunion. They married in August of 2003 and enjoyed 5 years of happiness before Reba passed on in 2008. After her death, he met a good friend, Jerrye Wagner, with whom he enjoyed 7 years of friendship before her passing.

He was proceeded in death by two sisters, Wanda Schwanz and Ruth Hines, and one brother Boyd Carpenter. He is survived by one brother, Elmer Carpenter and two sons, Brian Carpenter and wife Stephanie, and Mike Carpenter and wife Cheryl. He also leaves behind 5 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held on October 20th, 2018, with visitation at 10:00 A.M. and service at 11:00 A.M. at Barbee Memorial Presbyterian church, 501 Tiger Dr. in Excelsior Springs, MO. In lieu of flowers, donations to the American Heart Association in memorial to Jesse Arlie Carpenter at 1-800-242-8721 would be greatly appreciated.
