“Mike” Whorlow, beloved husband, father, Papa, son, brother, and Pastor entered his Heavenly Home on September 4, 2018 at the young age of 62, surrounded by his family.
The son of Charles and Glatha Whorlow was born in Creston, IA on April 15, 1956. He was raised in Iowa, graduating from Grand Community High School in Boxholm, IA. He received a Business and Management degree from the American Institute of Business, Des Moines IA, in 1976.
On February 2, 1980, he married his wife and helpmate, Paula Starcevic in Ames, IA. After working with youth in their home church, North Grand Christian Church, for the first two years of marriage, Mike and Paula felt God’s calling on their lives to serve Him in full-time ministry. The couple moved to Joplin, MO where Mike attended Ozark Bible College. Upon graduating with his Bachelors of Biblical Literature, Mike received his ordination from NGCC. The family began their first full-time ministry at First Christian Church in Okmulgee, OK. Their ministries over the following years included: First Christian Church in Stillwell, OK; Tyro Christian Church in Tyro, KS; North Grand Christian Church in Ames, IA and Parkview Christian Church in Sedalia, MO. In 2007, Mike became the Pastor of the Diamond Christian Church in Diamond, MO where he served until the time of his passing.
Mike was well loved by all who knew him and was greatly respected for his work ethic, his humility and generosity. His greatest desire was to see people come to a relationship with Christ. This desire was the driving force behind his decision to devote his life to ministry and working with youth. Mike was an avid sports fan and closely followed the Minnesota Vikings, Minnesota Twins and Kansas City Royals. His favorite pastime was working in his yard and spending time outdoors. His love of adventure led him to attempt such things as cliff jumping at the age of 61, which caused him to suffer a dislocated shoulder. Mike loved life, loved people and loved serving others. Mike was diagnosed with Stage 4 Colon Cancer in September of 2016. Despite aggressive chemotherapy his cancer spread to his lymph nodes, liver and lungs. His family is very proud of the fact that Mike only missed four Sundays of preaching due to his illness.
Mike is survived by the love of his life, Paula; their four children: Jason Whorlow (Karri) of Nixa, MO, Jennifer Trupp (Jonathan) of Bennett, CO, Brandon Whorlow of Ames, IA, and Katelyn Mobley (Travis) of Moncks Corner, SC; his parents, Charles & Glatha Whorlow; sister, Dianne Vaught (Rick); brother, Gary Whorlow (Lisa); and nieces and nephews. One of Mike’s greatest joys in life was to be a Papa to his seven grandchildren: Brianna & Amelia Whorlow, Gabriel, Amos & Norah Trupp and Gannon & Levi Whorlow.
Visitation will be held at Diamond Christian Church on Sunday, September 9 from 2:00 to 4:00pm. Mike’s family would like to invite friends to join in the celebration of his life at his Victory Service on Monday, September 10 at 11:00am, also at Diamond Christian Church, 205 E Market St., Diamond, MO. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Whorlow family, c/o Clark Funeral Home, PO Box 66, Neosho, MO 64850.
