Mark Howard Brewer, a long-time Carthage area resident and superb horseman, died Friday at Mercy Hospital in Springfield of injuries suffered in a car accident. He was 66.
Mark and his soul mate of 11 years, Julie Winter, were eastbound on Chestnut about a mile east of Carthage when they topped a hill and hit the rear of a tractor, also eastbound, about 8 a.m. Tuesday. Julie said the sun was blinding and that Mark swerved to the right, taking the brunt of the crash. Julie suffered a broken hip.
Mark’s death came just hours before that of his father, Archie N. Brewer, 99, of rural Carthage, who died early Saturday morning.
Mark’s professional love was horses, as a trainer and owner, mainly of thoroughbreds. In recent years, he and Julie had raced several horses, primarily on tracks in the Midwest. At the time of his death, Mark was starting to train a filly, affectionately named Winter Red, to run in Hot Springs, Ark., early next year.
Mark was born on Jan. 10, 1952, in Concordia, Kan. His parents, Archie and Irene Brewer, moved their farming operation from nearby Norway, Kan., to County Road 100 northeast of Carthage in 1961.
In 1970, Mark graduated from Jasper High School, where he was on the football, basketball and track teams. As a senior, he and John LeMasters, who became a life- long friend, were on the track team that won the state outdoor two-mile relay. In the state individual half-mile, Mark placed second.
Mark graduated from John Brown University with a bachelor’s degree in English and taught high school for a year in New Mexico. He returned to Missouri where various pursuits included farming with his father. After an arrest in Jasper County on a marijuana charge that today would result in a slap on the wrist, he served prison time. He turned that experience into a positive, developing a talent as a miniature artist, using a strand of his hair to paint scenes on rocks and small containers for family and friends.
He later worked for drug rehabilitation programs, handling hundreds of cases and speaking to youth groups about drug abuse. Mark also worked in real estate in the Carthage area for many years, renovating and renting houses.
He is survived by Julie Winter, and three children, Marshall Wakeman (Alem) of Granada Hills, California; Shawn Brady of Carthage ; and Avery Brewer (Tyler Owens) of Carthage. Other survivors include two grandchildren, Elias Brady and Carter Brewer; six siblings, Norman (Judy) of Bethesda; Vallie Cook of Carl Junction; Renie Wilson (Doug) of Chicago; Michael (Butch) Taft (Charlene) of Harbor City, California; Mary Ellen Morgan (Phil) of Columbia, Tennessee; and Joseph Brewer of West Plains; 18 nieces and nephews, 29 great nieces and nephews and three great-great nieces and nephews. Mark was preceded in death by his mother, Irene M. Brewer in 2015.
