Julia Charlene Welcher Hemphill, age 71 of Joplin, passed away at her home at 12:15 a.m. on Wednesday, August 20, 2014 after a lengthy illness.
Born January 13, 1943 in Joplin, she was the daughter of the late Charles E. Welcher and Julia C. Mitchell Welcher and lived in the Seneca and Joplin areas her lifetime. A graduate of Joplin High School, she attended the University of Arkansas and received her Bachelor of Education degree from Pittsburg State University. An educator for 30 years, she taught Social Studies in the Joplin R-VIII School District for 27 years. She was a member of First Community Church.
On December 17, 1971 she married James Hemphill in Joplin. He survives.
Additional survivors include two stepsons, Andy Hemphill of Joplin, Mick Hemphill of Miami, OK; two grandchildren, Bailey and Nick Hemphill; a nephew, Chuck Montgomery of Joplin; two nieces, Shauna Montgomery and Andrea Montgomery, both of Joplin; and a step niece, Ashley Buerge of Joplin.
Cremation arrangements are under the direction of Parker Mortuary. A Celebration of Life service will be held 10:30 a.m. Saturday at First Community Church. The family will receive friends following the service at the church. A private interment will be held at Ozark Memorial Park Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family encourages memorial contributions to First Community Church.
