June Marie Pommert, age 79, of Joplin, passed away peacefully, Sunday August 17, 2014, at Freeman Hospital, following a one month illness.
June was born on May 27, 1935, in Greenfield Ohio, the daughter of the late Richard and Lois (Oyer) Hill. She married her high school sweetheart John Pommert, on August 21, 1953, and they would have celebrated sixty-one years of marriage this Thursday. June attended Cincinnati Christian Seminary, Marshall University, Ozark Christian College, and received her BA from Missouri Southern State University. She received her MS degree from Pittsburg State University. June taught fifth grade for the Diamond school district for twenty-five years, retiring in 1995. She and her husband loved to travel, visiting all fifty states, thirty-seven countries including three trips to Israel, and enjoying eight ocean cruises. June and John ministered for forty years for Christian churches in Roscoe, Mo., East Liverpool, Chesapeake, Oh., Paintsville, Ky., and Joplin. She loved music often singing solos and directing church choirs. For several years she sang with the Voices of Joy, directed by Don Whitman. She also taught Sunday school. Church was her great joy in life! In recent years, June was confined to a wheelchair, but remained active as benevolence leader at Central City Christian Church and a helper at Crosslines. June was known as the “The Card Lady” for the numerous birthday and anniversary cards she sent. She loved children and children loved her.
She is survived by her husband, John Pommert, Joplin; three sons, David Pommert and wife, Sandra, Joplin, Robert Pommert and wife Roberta, Neosho, Mo., and Lincoln Pommert, Joplin; one daughter, Elizabeth Ashmore and husband Nicholas, Joplin; one sister, Dixie Reber and husband Jerry, Bluffton, Sc.; one brother Gary Hill and wife Joanne, Blanco, Tx.; five grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be 11:00 a.m. Thursday at Central City Christian Church. Johnny Adkins, Minister will officiate. Burial will be in Forest Park Cemetery. The family will receive friends 6-7 p.m. Wednesday at Mason-Woodard Chapel. Memorial contributions may be given to Central City Christian Church in care of the mortuary. Revelation 14:13 Blessed are those who die in the Lord. . . . that they may rest from their labors; and their works do follow them.
