Nina VonHolten

Nina Marie Hendershot VonHolten, 79, Carthage, Missouri, went to be with the lord early Wednesday morning, June 10, 2020 at Freeman West Hospital, Joplin, Missouri. 

Nina was born on August 28, 1940 in a log cabin on the family farm outside Bolivar, Missouri; the daughter of Fredrick William and Eva (Ruth) Hendershot. She attended a one room schoolhouse Pickle School. She was a 1958 graduate from Fair Play, Missouri. 

She then attended nurses training at Burge School and Drury College in Springfield, Missouri on scholarship. Nina worked at the Missouri Gas Company, and also worked as an x-ray technician and teacher for 13 plus years at St. Luke’s Hospital, Kansas City, Missouri. 

Nina met her husband, Larry VonHolten, through her roommate. They married on June 3, 1962 in Kansas City, Missouri. In 1974, the family moved to Carthage where she worked at McCune Brooks Hospital. She attended Fairview Christian Church in Carthage. Later, she worked at St. John’s Hospital in Joplin, where she then attended Park Plaza Christian Church in Joplin.








Nina was a strong Christian, loved watching her birds, and enjoyed quilting with the ladies at Fairview Christian Church and Park Plaza Church, Joplin. She loved seeing her family and friends. She also loved reading her bible, quoting scriptures, her war room, and being a master gardener.

Survivors include her husband, Dr. Larry VonHolten, Carthage; children, Sheril VonHolten-Cartwright (David), and Dr. Eric VonHolten (Sheila); grandchildren, Becca Rustin Laney (Doug), Bethany Rustin Perry (Matt), Hannah Miller, Kelsey Cartwright-Cotten (Scott), Candice Cartwright, Kaiti VonHolten-Lucas (Nile), Kenzie VonHolten, Sydni VonHolten, Zoe VonHolten, Sam VonHolten, and Shasta Moudy; great-grandchildren, Furious Laney, Bradley Holland, Atreyu Laney, Kyler Perry, Audrey Perry, Addison Cotten, Alexis Cotten, Hayven Cotten, Trinity Olmos, Tannon Olmos, Soren Lucas, and Olivia Smith; brother, John Paul Hendershot (Daisy); a special niece, Julie Cook (John); a brother-in-law, Darrell VonHolten (Kay); niece, Kelly Butaud (Arthur); and an AFS daughter, Gisela Flores.

She was preceded in death by her parents, and a sister-in-law, Barbara Hendershot.

Funeral services will be held 10:30 am, Wednesday, June 17, 2020 at Park Plaza Christian Church, Joplin, Missouri. The family will receive friends from 9:30 am until service time. Inurnment will take place at a later date. Memorial gifts are suggested to Park Plaza Christian Church Mission Funds in care of Knell Mortuary.
