Elaine Shoptaw

Susan “Elaine” Shoptaw, age 60, of Joplin, passed away on Sunday December 27, 2020 at Landmark Hospital, following a battle with Covid-19.

Elaine was born on September 6, 1960 in Webb City, MO, the daughter of Gerald and Susan (Lauck) Hulsey. She has been a lifetime area resident. She graduated from Carthage High School in 1979. 

Prior to graduation on the night of her senior prom, she married the love of her life, Thomas Shoptaw. Together they were blessed with two children. 








She worked for St. John’s Hospital as an office manager. She also worked as the church secretary. She was a longtime member of Diamond First Baptist Church. She loved sewing, crafts and making bows. She loved all children, especially her two granddaughters.

Elaine is survived by her husband of forty-one years, Tom Shoptaw, Joplin, MO; her daughter Stephanie Benson and husband Randall, Kansas City, MO; her son Chris Shoptaw, Joplin, MO; her parents, Gerald and Susan Hulsey, Joplin, MO; three brothers, Steven Hulsey and wife Kim, Oronogo, MO; Shannon Hulsey and wife Teri, Nevada, MO; and Shawn Hulsey, Joplin, MO; numerous nieces and nephews and two granddaughters, Katy and Alyssa Benson.

Funeral services will be 2:30 p.m. Thursday at Diamond First Baptist Church. Reverend Ron Crow will officiate. Burial will be a private family burial following the services. The pallbearers will be Steven Hulsey, Shannon Hulsey, Shawn Hulsey, Chris Shoptaw, Cody Hulsey, Randall Benson, A.J. Cezar, and Brandon King.

The visitation will be 1:30 p.m. Thursday at the Church, prior to the service. Memorial contributions may be given to Diamond First Baptist Church in care of the mortuary.

Arrangements are under the direction of Mason-Woodard Mortuary & Crematory.
