(From Mason-Woodard Mortuary)Dr. Albert J. Carnine, age 79 of Webb City, Mo. passed onto his heavenly home on May 2, 2023. Al was born August 3, 1943 in Bloomington, Illinois to the late Rev. Albert G. Carnine and Ruth E. (Bierbaum) Carnine.
Dr. Carnine graduated from Bloomington High School in 1961. He received a B.M.E. from Illinois Wesleyan University in 1965: A.M.M. and M.M.E. from Southern Methodist University in 1966, and a D.M.A. from University of Texas, Austin in 1977.
He was Choral Director at Quincy Senior High School, Quincy, Illinois from 1966-1969. Choral Director and Coordinator of Vocal Music for the Vernon, Texas School System, Assistant Professor of Music at East Texas Baptist College from 1973-1977.
He came to Missouri Southern State University in 1977. After a career of 45 years in music education, Dr. Carnine retired from Missouri Southern State University in 2014 as a Professor of Music. He was greatly appreciated and admired for his expertise and sense of humor by the many students he had the privilege to teach throughout his career.
He founded the MSSU Choral Society. Dr. Carnine served as Minister of Music in various local churches. He was highly respected and frequently called upon as an adjudicator, clinician, and director for Public School Music festivals and clinics. He was actively involved with numerous committees for the betterment of both the community and the university. He was the director of the Sweet Adelines in Joplin, a life member of the American Choral Directors Association, The American Choral Foundation, Music Educators Conference, and the Society for the Preservation and Encouragement of Barber Shop Quartet Singing in America.
Honors and awards include: Blue Key 1964, Kappa Delta Pi (Education Society), President of Acacia Fraternity, Friend of Education Award (Joplin Educators Association) in 1980. Listed in The International Who’s Who in Music; Who’s Who Among America’s Teachers, Outstanding Young Men of America, Personalities of the South, International Man of the Year Men Achievement, Dictionary of International Biography; International Who’s Who of Professionals. Honorary Faculty Inductee for Phi Eta Sigma National Honor Society. In 1997 he received the Missouri Southern State University Outstanding Teacher of the Year Award and in 2002 the Missouri Choral Directors Association Outstanding District Director Award. In November, 2016 he received the prestigious title of Professor Emeritus from Missouri Southern State University. He was recognized in the 2019 Joplin Magazine as one of the pathfinders for shaping the community and culture. Dr. Carnine was honored by having a room named after him by the Music Department at Missouri Southern State College.

He is survived by his wife Nancy (Isaacson) Carnine whom he married August 2, 1969 in Quincy, Illinois. Al is survived by two daughters, Michelle Hunter and husband Brian of Savannah, GA, and Holly Spate and husband Brian of Plano, TX; a son David Carnine and wife Loren of Carthage, MO; four granddaughters, Kaitlin and Abby Hunter of Savannah, GA, and Kalen and Brooke Spate of Plano, TX. Other survivors are a sister Connie (Carnine) Ichihashi and husband Jeff, sister-in-law Shirley Carnine, and nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and brother, Dennis Carnine.
Funeral services have been scheduled for 10:00 a.m. Saturday, May 6, 2023 at the Joplin Family Worship Center 5290 East 7th. Street Joplin, Mo. The family will receive friends during a time of visitation prior to the service beginning at 9:00 a.m. Saturday at the church. Burial will follow at Ozark Memorial Park Cemetery.
