Richard Smith

(From Parker Mortuary)

Richard Earl Smith, age 97, a cherished pillar of the Joplin community, passed away peacefully at home on February 6, 2024. Born on May 28, 1926, in Joplin, Missouri to the late Earl and Laura (Stinnett) Smith, Richard's life was a testament to his loving, generous, and courageous spirit. He was a man who not only built structures with his hands but also built lasting relationships with his heart.

Richard, a proud graduate of Joplin High School's class of 1944, answered the call of duty and served his country in the U.S. Army during World War II from 1944 to 1946. His service to the nation was a source of great pride for him and an inspiration to all who knew him.

Returning home from the war, Richard channeled his strong work ethic and leadership skills into founding R.E. Smith Construction in 1952. His business acumen and integrity led the company to flourish, and he continued to lead the firm until passing the reins to his sons.

Throughout his life, Richard remained deeply involved in many community events and services. His commitment to the betterment of Joplin was evident through his participation in numerous initiatives that improved the lives of his fellow citizens. Richard's contributions to the community were not only through his professional work but also through his personal engagements, where his generous nature shone brightly.

Richard's legacy is lovingly carried on by his devoted family. On December 2, 1944, Richard married his high school sweetheart, Barbara J. Johnson in Arkansas prior to being shipped off to war. To this union they helped as a guiding light to their children: Dick Smith (Debbie) of Joplin, Steve Smith (Christine) of Webb City, Dave Smith (Jill) of Joplin, and Karen Smith (Mike) of Joplin. His grandchildren, Dusty Smith, Amber Duncan, Rusty Smith, Jodi Mouton, Kari Wilcox, Margaret Prince, Sam Smith, Brady Smith, Jacqueline Smith, Spencer Smith, Laura Rathmann, and Jon Longenecker, will forever cherish the wisdom and joy he imparted. With 42 great-grandchildren and six great-great-grandchildren, Richard's influence will resonate through generations.

Richard was a man whose life was rich with experiences and relationships. His love for his family was the cornerstone of his existence, and his actions always reflected the depth of his commitment to them. The stories of his courage, whether in the face of wartime adversity or the daily challenges of life, will continue to inspire all who were fortunate enough to hear them.

In every aspect of his life, Richard exemplified the virtues of kindness and generosity. His hands, which skillfully crafted the infrastructure of his beloved city, were equally adept at offering a comforting embrace or helping a neighbor in need. He was a man who led by example, teaching his children and grandchildren the value of hard work, the importance of community, and the power of love.

Richard is preceded in death by his parents; wife, Barbara on January 29, 2013; a granddaughter, Ellie Smith; brothers, Ramon and Bob Smith.
