Lawrence L Woods, age 87, Joplin, passed away on Tuesday, October 17, 2017 at a local nursing center.
Lawrence was born December 14, 1929 in Welch, Oklahoma, son of the late Cecil and Mamie Woods. His family moved to Joplin in 1941 where he attended Gregg Elementary School, South Junior High, and Joplin High School before enlisting with the United States Navy. He served for over 20 years, and then 10 more in the reserves before retiring and moving back to Joplin. He served in Korea, China, and Vietnam where he earned several ribbons, medals, and citations for his service.
Lawrence was a lifetime member of the V.F.W., Post 534 where he served as Post Commander from 1995-1996, and was also with the Cooties. He was a member of the Iron Gates Christian Church, and the NRA ( National Rifle Association).
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Loveta Woods who died January 24, 2014, a sister, Rosetta Harmon, and three brothers, Paul, Clarence, and Carl Woods.
Survivors include sisters, Betty Terry and Georgia Harmon both of Joplin, and Patty Turley of Panama City, Florida; brothers, Don Woods and wife Janeth of Kansas City, Missouri,, Charles Woods and wife Sharon of Crown Point, Indiana; several nieces and nephews.
Graveside services will be Monday October 23, 2017 at 11:00 a.m. in Osborne Memorial Cemetery with Pastor Charles Stillman officiating, and full military honors.
Cremation arrangements are under the direction of Parker Mortuary.
