Martha C. Stephens, 'Marty', age 80, passed away at 8:09 p.m. Sunday, October 29, 2017.
Marty was born January 30, 1937 in Joplin to the late James Glenn Tucker and Freddie B. Hosp Tucker and was a lifetime resident.
Marty graduated from the former Joplin Junior College in 1957 and worked alongside her husband, Dr. James E. Stephens, as his office manager. She was a member of P.E.O. Sisterhood, Chapter GQ. She was a lifetime member of the MSSU Alumni Association and named Outstanding Alumni in 1975. Marty had been a longtime member of First Presbyterian Church and was attending St. Paul United Methodist Church in recent years. She was very active in Thomas Hart Benton week as chairman of school activities. Marty was an extremely caring person whose compassion influenced the lives of everyone she knew.
She married James E. Stephens, D.O. on June 6, 1957 in Joplin. He preceded her in death on January 9, 1997.
Marty was also preceded in death by her sister, Jeanene McCoy.
Survivors include her children: Julie Stephens, Fairfield, Iowa; Jeff Stephens, Kansas City, Missouri; Penny Collins, and her fiancé, John Chirby, Joplin; Perry Stephens and wife, Joyce, Branson, Missouri; a brother, Fred Tucker and wife Joyce, Belleville, Illinois; grandchildren, Daniel Stephens; Jessica Spear; Carly Ringstaff and husband, Joe; Molly Bettis and husband, Lance; Alex and Olivia Stephens; and great grandchildren: Collin, Harrison, Nora, and Lydia Spear, Ellis and Ruby Ringstaff and Theodore Bettis. We want to include a special acknowledgement of her daughter by choice, Michelle Yarnall and husband, Jeff and their sons, Jake and Josh.
Memorial services are planned for Wednesday at 11:00 a.m. at Parker Mortuary Chapel. The family will receive friends following the services at the mortuary. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Dr. Jim Stephens Memorial Scholarship Fund with Missouri Southern State University, in care of Parker Mortuary.
Arrangements are under the direction of Parker Mortuary.
