Glenn Thomas “Tom” Atkins Sr., age 73, of Joplin, Mo., passed away at 6:13 a.m. Thursday, October 19, 2017 at his home following a lengthy illness. Tom was born December 16, 1943 in Joplin and had lived in the Joplin-Diamond area most of his life. Tom was a retired truck driver, working for Beaufort Transfer Co., Yellow Freight, and ABF Trucking.
Tom was a member of the Teamsters Union, Local 823. He served his country in the U. S. Army during the Vietnam War. He was a member of the American Legion Post 13, V.F.W. Post 534, and Past Commander of DAV Chapter 52. Tom was also a member of the Joplin Elks Lodge, a life member of Joplin Masonic Lodge #335, Scottish Rite Bodies, Valley of Joplin, Abou Ben Adhem Shrine Temple in Springfield, where he was a member of the Ring Club in 1983, and the Joplin Shrine Club where he was a member of the Oriental Band.
Tom married Sasha Watts August 14, 1965 in Joplin and she survives. Additional survivors include three sons, Doug Chew and wife Vicki, Tommy Atkins Jr., Dustin Atkins, and one daughter, Marcinda Hempen, all of Joplin, two sisters, Mary Lou Hendrix and husband Robert, Granby, Mo., and Sue Gilliam, Diamond, Mo. and 13 grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a brother, Wayne Atkins.
Services will be at 10:00 a.m. Tuesday at the Mason-Woodard Chapel. Entombment will follow with Military Honors at the Ozark Memorial Park Mausoleum. Visitation will be at 6:00 p.m. Monday at the Mason-Woodard Chapel with Masonic Services at 7:00 p.m. Memorial contributions are requested to the Shriner’s Hospital, or the DAV Chapter 52 in care of the Mortuary. Arrangements have been entrusted to Mason-Woodard Mortuary of Joplin, Mo.
