Johnnie Barbara Newalla, age 89, of rural Lawrence County, Miller, Missouri, went to be with her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, April11, 2020. Johnnie Boone Newalla was born in Fairfax, Oklahoma, December 28, 1930, to the late John and Bertha Boone.
She graduated from Fairfax High School in 1948. She furthered her educational career by attending Oklahoma A&M (OSU) for one year. In the summer of 1949, she married Woodrow Newalla of Fairfax, Oklahoma. From Fairfax, they moved to Springfield, Missouri to begin their married life, which lasted 56 wonderful years. Johnnie then enrolled in Southwest Missouri State (MSU) completing all required courses, graduating with a B.S. in education. She went on to earn her master’s degree from Missouri State University in elementary and secondary guidance counseling.
The Newallas moved to their rural farm in 1958, near Miller, Missouri, where they resided until their deaths. She was employed as a school counselor beginning with the Sarcoxie High School, later taking a position at the Mt. Vernon Elementary School and retiring with the Carthage School District in 1985.
Johnnie was a devoted Christian. Baptized at an early age, follower of the Lord Jesus Christ, she attended Paris Springs Methodist Church and Crossways Baptist. She never wanted to stop learning. Reading was a passion. She loved traveling with her husband and spending time with family especially Easter at Roaring River. As of late, she enjoyed gospel singing, having directed the local church choir, helping to further God’s Kingdom on earth, was a wonderful singer and enjoyed her daily bible readings.

Johnnie is survived by her two children, son, George Newalla of Miller and daughter, JoMonica Russell and her husband, Don, of Pennsboro, Missouri; three grandchildren, Levi Russell, Raven Clark and Caitlin Lamberth; five great-grandchildren, Trace Russell, Woodrow Clark, Damian, Dalen and LaDayiah Lamberth; one brother, Bill Boone and his wife, Norma, along with many nieces, nephews and many friends.
Johnnie is preceded in death by her husband, Woodrow Newalla, her parents, John and Bertha Boone, three brothers, George, Bernand and Daniel Boone and two sisters, Myrtle Wentworth and Virginia Bates.
In light of the concerns and restrictions placed on group gatherings due to COVID-19, there will be a private family graveside at the Gray Horse Cemetery, in Gray Horse, Oklahoma, under the direction of the Fossett-Mosher Funeral Home in Mt. Vernon.
A celebration of Johnnie’s life will be held at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made payable to the St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, in care of the funeral home.
