Gene Mitts

Louis Eugene (Gene) Mitts, 85, of Nevada, Missouri passed away peacefully on

August 1, 2023, surrounded by his loving family. He was born on July 4, 1938, in Nevada, Missouri, a son of the late Clarence and Edna (Browning) Mitts. Gene and Sheila Gail Veronica Glenn were united in marriage on September 08, 1961, while he was stationed at Mt. Clemens, Michigan, Selfridge Air Force Base.








Gene joined the United States Air Force 1955, and he served eight years. Gene did his basic training at Lackland Air Force Base. His first station was Kessler Air Force Base in Biloxi Mississippi from May of 1955 to March of 1956. He then was transferred to the North Pole station until May of 1957. He next served at Tinker Air Force Base until July of 1958 when he was transferred to Japan. After 2 years in Japan, he was transferred to Selfridge Air Force Base, Mt. Clemens Michigan, in August of 1960. He served there until he was honorably discharged in July of 1963.

He worked for Ford Motor Company and later G.M. Moter Company in Flint Michigan upon leaving the military. He came to Nevada in 1973 and also worked for G.I. Taxi Cab and Mitts Taxi for his brothers, Shorty and Willie Mitts in Nevada, Missouri. Later, he worked for the City of Nevada, Nevada State Hospital and driving buses for Nevada School District. He proudly retired at 62 years of age. He enjoyed watching races at the Nevada Speedway and Nascar Races. Gene enjoyed sitting on the Nevada Square and watching the people passing by. Gene was very proud of all his children and their families. He enjoyed spending time with all his children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren.

He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Sheila; daughters, Cathy (Tony) Haynes of Grand Rivers, Kentucky, Patty (Terry) Heffernan of Nevada, Missouri, Cindy (Bob) Webb of Palm Bay, Florida, Sonia (Antony) Salinas of Wichita, Kansas, and one son Jason Walsh of Nevada, Missouri; grandchildren, Amanda (Tim)Davis of Hyannis, Nebraska, Randi Brockmiller of Joplin, Missouri, Sara Thompson of Nevada, Missouri, Christopher (Kelly) Alexander of Eureka, Missouri, Erica (Phil) Brammer of Omaha, Nebraska, Zachary Mitts, Whitney Boultinghouse, Emily Murphy and Brylee Edwards of Wichita Kansas: great grandchildren, Kaylee and Cash Davis of Hyannis Nebraska, Brayden Brockmiller, Evelyn Shouse, Brooklyn, Phoenix, Trenton, Aspen and Lainee Hiller of Joplin, Missouri, Braxton and Cali Thompson of Springfield, Missouri, Deacon and Nolan Alexander of Eureka, Missouri, Chloe, Chase, Gemma, and Piper Brammer of Omaha, Nebraska, Aria Mitts, Avery Mitts and Arianna Boultinghouse of Wichita, Kansas. 

Gene was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Clarence (Shorty), Willie and Fred and sisters, Ellen Cambell, Marie Logston, Lucille Breeding and Dorothy Winters.








Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, August 5, 2023, at Ferry Funeral Home in Nevada with Tony Haynes officiating. Interment with Military Honors will follow in Newton Burial Park in Nevada. The family will receive friends from 5-7:00 p.m. on Friday evening at the funeral home.

Memorials are suggested in his name to Nevada American Legion Lodge Post #2, or VFW Post #2175 c/o Ferry Funeral Home.
