Ernest S. Betterton, Jr., age 90 of Joplin, passed away at 7:05 p.m. on Friday, October 31, 2014 at The Communities of Wildwood Ranch after a sudden illness.
Born September 9, 1924 in Joplin, he was the son of the late Ernest S. Betterton, Sr. and Carrie Vaught Betterton and was a lifetime Joplin resident. A truck driver all of his working life, he retired from Yellow Freight. A U.S. Army Veteran of World War II, he served in the European Theater of Operations. He was a member of the V.F.W., American Legion and Blendville Christian Church.
On April 5, 1946 he married Mildred N. (Sally) Goode in Columbus, KS. She survives.
Additional survivors include a son, Scott Betterton of Joplin; a daughter Eva Temczuk and husband Craig of Omaha, NE; four grandchildren, Carrie Jones and husband Taylor of Webb City, Paula Nelson and husband Shawn of Surprise, AZ, Tracy Case and husband Chad of Wichita, KS, Justin Betterton and wife Ann of Wichita; seven great-grandchildren, Alexis, Connor, Hailee, Wyatt, Emilee, Mikah and Isabella; a sister-in-law, Clardene Betterton; and a brother-in-law, Marvin Greer.
Preceding him in death was a son, Ernest Craig Betterton; three sisters, Anna, Earnestine and Juanita; three brothers, Jack, C.B. and Nolan.
The family would ask that friends and family gather to honor the life of a loving father and very proud grandfather, and great grandfather for Graveside services with military honors. Services to be held 11:00 a.m. Monday at Osborne Memorial Cemetery, under the direction of Parker Mortuary. Justin Betterton, Wyatt Case and Taylor Jones will assist as pallbearers.
