Sheila Pekarek, age 49, Joplin, Mo., passed away November 18 after a recent illness. Sheila was born March 1, 1965 to Michael and Vivian Smith. She was a lifelong resident of the area. On July 21, 1990 she married Daniel A. Pekarek of Joplin, Mo.
She worked at Ozark Center in Joplin as an information technology specialist. She enjoyed her job and was well loved by her coworkers. She attended both St. Mary’s Catholic Church with her family and her childhood church, Newtonia Baptist Church.
Sheila was above all a loving mother to her daughters Emily and Abby and a devoted wife to her husband, Dan. She was also a loving sister and daughter. Sheila had many friends and enjoyed life immensely. She made a positive impact on many lives and will be greatly missed.
Sheila leaves behind two daughters, Emily and Abby Pekarek, her husband Daniel, her father Michael Smith and wife Pam Smith, two sisters, Michelle Copeland and her husband Ryan Copeland and daughter Ryli, and Charri Edens and her husband Rick Edens and sons Dallas Gary and Otti Gary and wife Carla. She also leaves behind a large extended family and many devoted and loving friends. She is preceded in death by her mother Vivian Smith and her grandparents.
A brief graveside service will take place at 11 a.m. on Friday November 21 at Newtonia Cemetery in Newtonia, MO. There will be a casual memorial visitation on Friday evening from 5 to 7 p.m. at McAuley Catholic High School at 930 S. Pearl in Joplin, MO.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to the Joplin Area Catholic Schools or to the Autism Center through Ozark Center in care of Thornhill-Dillon Mortuary. On-line condolences may be sent to the family through www.thornhilldillon.com.
