Ruth M. Hess, 89, Carthage, passed away Monday, November 10, 2014 at her home after a sudden illness. Ruth M. Zulauf was born September 10, 1925 in North Kansas City, MO; a daughter of the late Jacob August Zulauf and Blanche M. (DeGonia) Zulauf. She was a graduate of North Kanas City High School, Class of 1943. She married Dr. Orien E. Hess on April 25, 1946 in North Kansas City; he preceded her in death in November, 2000. She and her husband moved to Carthage from Kansas City in 1952.
Ruth was very active up to the time of her death. She was a long-term volunteer for both McCune Brooks Hospital and Hospice Compassus. She played regularly in several bridge groups and very much enjoyed her neighbors and friends. Those who knew her, whether as mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, aunt, friend or stranger, knew her as positive, kind, and caring.
Survivors include a daughter, Mary (Ron) Rainosek, Harker Heights, TX; four sons, Jim (Sue) Hess, Carthage, Bob (Kim) Hess, Carthage, John (Kirsti) Hess, The Woodlands, Texas and Tom (Kelly) Hess, Shawnee, Kansas; eleven grandchildren and twelve great grandchildren.
Visitation will be held from 6:00 – 7:00 PM, Thursday, November 13 at Knell Mortuary, Carthage. Funeral mass will be celebrated at 2:00 PM, Friday, November 14 at St. Ann’s Catholic Church, Carthage. Fr. Bill Hodgson will officiate. Interment will be in Resurrection Cemetery, Kansas City, MO. Memorial gifts are suggested to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital of Memphis, TN as well as Hospice Compassus, in care of Knell Mortuary.
