Helen M. Johnson, 98, of Columbus, Kansas passed from this life on Saturday, January 7, 2017 at Autumn Place in Columbus, KS.
Helen was born March 27, 1918 in Hallowell, Kansas to Milt and Grace (Smith) Forkner. After graduating from Cherokee County Community High School, Helen taught at Globe and then Oak Valley rural schools in Cherokee County. She married Robert “Bob” Johnson on December 29, 1937 in Columbus, KS. After her marriage, she stayed at home as a homemaker taking care of her family and helping Bob on the family farm near Faulkner, KS. Helen was a member of the Faulkner Christian Church and she loved her church family. She enjoyed reading, journaling, machine quilting, and embroidery painting. She loved having the family over after church on Sunday’s and cooking them a family dinner. Helen’s family was so important to her and she cherished all of her grandchildren. Helen loved to send cards to friends and family for all occasions.
Helen is preceded in death by her parents; husband; three sisters, Juanita Horn, Maxine Wiseman-Goodger, Billie Miller; and one infant brother, Milton Dale Forkner.
Helen is survived by two daughters, Janice Maxwell and husband Jim of rural Columbus, KS, and Roberta Hoy and husband Tony of Dearing, KS; one sister, Joy Gatewood and husband Charles of Columbus, KS; nine grandchildren, Bob Maxwell and wife Kathleen of Valencia, CA, Lisa Maxwell-Craig and husband Larry Craig of Oviedo, FL, Kenny Hoy and wife Trena of Olathe, KS, Lori (Maxwell)Simmons and husband Tony of Seneca, MO, Tosha (Hoy) Falsone and husband Anthony of San Antonio, TX, Shawna Maxwell-Ergin and husband Erhan Ergin of Istanbul, Turkey, Brent Maxwell and wife Christina of Larned, KS, John Hoy and wife Sarah of Coffeyville, KS, Shanel (Maxwell) Bullard and husband John of Columbus, KS; seventeen great grandchildren; two great-great grandchildren, with a third expected to be born around Helen’s Birthday; along with many nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m., Thursday, January 12, 2017 at Derfelt Funeral Home of Oswego. Pastor Terry Robison will officiate. Burial will follow in the Oswego Cemetery. Memorial donations may be made to the Columbus Autumn Place, Activity Fund or to Hospice Compassus in Pittsburg, KS in care of the funeral home.
