Gary Doerge

(From Knell Mortuary)

Gary W. Doerge, 74, Carthage, passed away Tuesday at his home after a lengthy illness. Gary Wayne Doerge was born May 20, 1942 in Carthage; a son of the late Mason T. Doerge and Maxine Reid Doerge. Gary was a graduate of Carthage Senior High School, Class of 1960 and received his BS degree in Industrial Technology from SMSU in 1970. He married Donna Maxwell on July 14, 1963 in Avilla, MO; she survives.

Upon graduation from Southwest Missouri State university Gary and Donna moved to Kansas City where he began his career with the Atomic Aerospace Commission/Bendix Aerospace. Gary and Donna welcomed their only child Amy into their lives in 1972. In 1974, Gary moved the family to Tulsa, Oklahoma to begin a lifelong career in the petroleum industry, specifically in Loss Prevention and Control. This career culminated with more than 20 years with Phillips Petroleum where he worked in Oklahoma, Texas, and finally as the Loss Prevention Manager for Phillips Puerto Rico Chemical Company, in Puerto Rico. During more than 30 years in the Aerospace and Petroleum industries Gary Gary had the opportunity to travel throughout the U.S., Canada, China, Singapore, and many other locations around the world.

Upon retirement from Phillips, Gary spent the better part of his time traveling with Donna on regular trips to Hawaii and Arizona where they enjoyed wonderful vacations and most importantly warm weather. Gary was a true “Mr. Fix It” and there was never a problem he couldn’t solve around the house, in the yard, or on the car. Frequently, Gary could be found repairing, improving, restoring old cars, or even giving haircuts. As though this wasn’t enough, Gary decided to end retirement and become a real estate agent with Charles Burt Realtors for the last several years where he enjoyed great success working with families to fulfill their home ownership goals. While not on traveling, playing Mr. Fix It, or selling homes you could find Gary surrounded by family with a smile on his face and at any number of soccer, softball, baseball, golf, basketball, and football games watching his beloved grandkids.

Survivors include a daughter; Amy (Chuck) Bryant, Carthage; two grandchildren, Mason and Hailey Bryant, Carthage and one brother, Ken (Beverly) Doerge, Overland Park, KS. Gary was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, LeRoy Doerge.

Visitation will be held from 6:00 – 7:00 PM, Thursday, January 19, at Knell Mortuary, Carthage. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 PM, Friday, January 20 in the Knell Mortuary Chapel.
