Barry Wayne Duncan, 62, passed away at Freeman Hospital in Joplin, January 11, 2017. Barry was born February 11, 1954 in St Louis, Missouri to Jack and Billie (Sheffler) Duncan. Barry was a lifetime Carthage resident. He received his BS Degree in Business Administration from Pittsburg State College, then an MBA in 1977. Barry had a 32-year career with the Carthage Police Department. He joined the CPD as a reserve in 1977. Later in 1977, he went full time. In his 32 years, he went from a reserve patrolman to patrolman to detective to sergeant to lieutenant, then interim chief. He retired in 2009 as a lieutenant. In his retirement, he became an historian of Carthage and published many books. Barry also wrote accident reporting software for police departments used throughout Missouri.
Barry was united in marriage to Debbie Bender March 7, 1981 in Carthage, Missouri; she survives.
Barry is survived by one daughter Abbie Duncan and one son Trevor Duncan and wife Jessica, one brother Mark Duncan and wife Jan, two granddaughters Harlow and Haedyn Duncan, all residing in Carthage.
Services will be held 2:00 p.m. Saturday, January 14, 2017 at the First United Methodist Church of Carthage. Visitation will be held from 1:00 to 2:00 p.m. Saturday, January 14, 2017 at the First United Methodist Church. Burial will be at Park Cemetery. Contributions can be made to the Carthage Records Center in care of Ulmer Funeral Home. Arrangements are under the direction of Ulmer Funeral Home.
