Max Ray Reynolds, age 94, Joplin, passed away on Saturday, January 28, 2017 at Freeman West Hospital.
Max was born September 27, 1922 in Albuquerque, New Mexico, son of the late Lloyd and Ruth Ann Annes Reynolds. He served in the United States Army during World War II with the anti-aircraft division, receiving four bronze stars for his service, and honorably discharged as a Sergeant in July of 1945.
He returned to Joplin and worked for Hudson Motor Company as a mechanic for a while before opening his own shop on 4th and St. Louis in Joplin. He then began his career in heavy equipment and excavating as owner and operator of Reynolds Excavating in Joplin which he did for nearly 40 years. In 1953, he designed and built Ozark Speedway on West 20th which he ran for five years. After retiring, he opened Rusty Nail Flea Market with his wife which they ran for several years.
Max was always involved with many civic organizations including Masonic Lodge #345 of Joplin, the Scottish Rite, Abou Ben Adhem Shrine, past president Oriental Band, Jester's Court #73, past president Joplin Shrine Club, Chairman of Shriners' Nursing Program, past president Jasper County Heart Association, Chairman of Demolays, and was also a member of Park Plaza Christian Church.
In addition to his parents, Max was preceded in death by a step-son, Jay Willis; daughter, Elizabeth; and a son, Tom.
Survivors include his wife of over 40 years, Barbara Shaw Reynolds; step-son, Tracy Willis; son, Danny Reynolds; daughter, Ruth Ann Powers; seven grandchildren and several great-grandchildren.
Memorial services will be Sunday, February 5, 2017 at 2:30 p.m. at Park Plaza Christian Church with Pastor B.A. Austin officiating.
Cremation arrangements are under the direction of Parker Mortuary.
