Charlotte Earlene Scourten, Age 80, of Joplin, Missouri, transitioned to be with the Lord on April 23, 2014, at Freeman Hospital, surrounded by her family, following a brief illness.
Charlotte was born on April 10, 1934 in Nowata, Oklahoma, the daughter of the late Frederick Douglas Hubbard and Eva Hubbard Downing. After the passing of her father Charlotte relocated to Coffeyville, KS where she was raised with her mother and step father Asa Downing. She moved to Joplin, MO in 2008. Charlotte was a member of Shiloh Missionary Baptist Church and a lifetime member of Calvary Baptist Church in Coffeyville, Ks. She was a praying woman, loved reading the bible, enjoyed working in the church and was a loyal Usher. Charlotte was 1 of 9 siblings and loved her family and friends affectionately. Charlotte was an accomplished seamstress and worked to provide for her family as a tailor in the fine clothing industry and is known for producing numerous fashion shows in the area. She also worked for Coffeyville Regional Hospital, retiring in 1998. She was known for cooking some finger licking meals and enjoyed making crafts. She will be remembered as a person who clearly spoke her opinion, and someone who was very proud of her daughters, grandchildren and family.
Charlotte is survived by two daughters, Cheryl Fields and husband Henry, Joplin, and Tawyuna Palmer, Joplin; five granddaughters; Tracy Scourten, Joplin, Sharla “Nicky” Jones and husband Patrick, Joplin, Tasha Palmer, Garland, TX, Yolanda Britt and husband Lawrence, Memphis, TN, and Megan Palmer and fiancĂ© Jeremy Byers, Dallas, TX; eight great-grandchildren, Jason Scourten, Kristen Scourten, Omar May, Tyana Palmer, Patrick Jones, Jr., Lawrence Britt, III, Landon Britt, and Jeremy Byers, II; and two great-great grandchildren, Aiden Scourten and Jaxson Scourten and close nephew Lyle Malone along with a host of nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her father Fredrick Hubbard, mother Eva Hubbard Downing and step-father Asa Downing, a daughter, Pamela Scourten; four brothers Ercell, Fred, Marvin, Robert and four sisters Hazel, Javine, Sirena and Elnora.
Charlotte’s Home Going Celebration will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday at Villa Heights Christian Church. Pallbearers will be Jeremy Byers, Lawrence Britt, Nate Colbert, Tommie Ferguson, Quinterrio Jackson, Omar May and Patrick Jones. Reverend Samuel Nero, Jr. will officiate. Cremation will follow the service with a private interment of ashes to be in Fairview Cemetery, Coffeyville, KS.
The family will receive friends 6-7 p.m. Friday at Mason-Woodard Mortuary. The family will be celebrating at 418 South Cox, Joplin, MO.
