Flora Jean Nelson, age 90, of Joplin, Missouri, passed away April 10, 2014 at the home of her son Brent.
She was born December 23, 1923 in Joplin, Missouri to Charles and Etta J. Glosson Smith. They preceded her in death in 1984. She is also preceded in death by a sister, Helen Hosp; brother "Son", a brother Richard Smith, a living brother, Bob Smith, and her best buddy, Mae Smith.
In 1943 she was united in marriage to Amos Neal Farris. He preceded her in death of May of 1973. She then married Charles Nelson on May 24, 1974. He preceded her in death on December 22, 1990.
Jean worked as a phone operator. Jean was an excellent seamstress. She occasionally sewed for Missouri Mills Store. Jean loved to crochet hats for anyone who would take one. At Spring River Christian Village, she was known as the "Hat Lady". One Christmas, she made more than 300 hats for Indian children at a reservation. She was a member of the Reorganized Church of the Latter Day Saints. She was a member of the L'Amitie Club. She also loved to play dominoes and a card game "Shanghi" with a group of her friends.
She is survived by a daughter, Sallie Cupp and her husband Steve, a son Chris Farris and his wife Becca, and Brent Farris and wife Sharon, all of Joplin; 9 grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren.
Graveside services are planned for Monday, April 14, 2014 at 11:30 AM at Ozark Memorial Cemetery, Joplin, Missouri. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Avalon Hospice in care of the mortuary.
Arrangements are under the direction of Parker Mortuary, Joplin, Missouri.
