Mary Ellen Baker, 85, Joplin, passed away at 8:20 a.m. Monday, April 28, 2014 at Wildwood Ranch after an illness.
Born Mary Ellen Butler on July 6, 1928 at Monett, Missouri, to the late Odus Eagle Butler and Bessie Fandreger Butler, she was reared in Joplin. She was a 1946 graduate of Joplin High School and a graduate of the former Joplin Junior College. She also graduated from Missouri State University, Springfield and Missouri State University, Warrensburg.
Mary Ellen and Russel E. Baker were married on August 16, 1958 in Joplin. They resided in Kansas City until 1998 when they moved to Joplin. Mr. Baker passed away in 2003.
She taught in the Joplin public schools for five years and in the Kansas City school system for twenty seven years, retiring in 1985.
Mrs. Baker was a member of Immanuel Lutheran church; the Lutheran Women’s Missionary League; the Woman’s Club of Joplin; Alpha Delta Kappa, honorary sorority for women educators; the Missouri Retired Teachers Association and the Kansas City Association of School Retirees.
Survivors include first cousins, John O. Hopper, Nixa, Missouri, Zella Sharp (Maurce), Harrison, Arkansas, Pauline Maples, Crane, Missouri, Paul E. Stewart, Deerfield, Illinois; and a number of next generation cousins, including Sally Macaulay (John), Joplin.
Services are planned for Thursday at 11:00 a.m. at Immanuel Lutheran Church. Pastor Gregory Mech will officiate. Interment will follow at Mount Hope Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to Immanuel Lutheran Church, care of Parker Mortuary.
