Janette Carter

 Janette Mae Carter died on April 10, 2014 in Joplin, Missouri. She had been a resident at Spring River Christian Village since September 2013 due to disabilities following a stroke.

Janette was born November 20, 1929 in Brainerd, Minnesota. She was the first born of James Thomas Templeton and Ethel Edith Partlow. As a young girl she moved with her parents to the Pacific Northwest initially to Auburn, Washington and subsequently to South Tacoma, Washington. She graduated Lincoln High School in June 1949. Soon thereafter she went to work as a clerk in the Army Post Exchange at Fort Lewis, Washington. It was there she met Selden J. Carter, Jr. who at the time was serving in the Army and was destined to become her husband. They were married on September 6, 1951 at Asbury Methodist Church in South Tacoma. From that time on she was totally devoted to her husband and to the family they would eventually produce. As the young wife to a very young soldier, life presented many new challenges which she met willingly. In the years to follow, due to the nature of her husband’s profession, there would be numerous moves and several periods of prolonged separation. Janette accepted each of these situations as a normal event in the life of an Army wife.

 Her first child, Laurie, was born in Heidelberg, Germany. Her second, Daniel, was born in Huntsville, Alabama. Catherine, her third, was born in Omaha, Nebraska. Sandra was the fourth born and that took place in Wurtzburg, Germany a little over ten years after Laurie’s birth. There were times when she had to fill the role of both a mother and that of a father. There was never a time when she complained or considered giving up. She was a loving and caring mother, seeing to all the needs of her children and all the while continued to be a loving, devoted wife to her husband. In her earlier years, Janette was active in teaching in Sunday School and in Vacation Bible School. She loved working with children and especially enjoyed working with art and craft projects. She would always find time to play house or other games with the grandchildren whenever they visited. Janette was a member of the First Baptist Church of Webb City.

Janette was preceded in death by her parents. She is survived by her husband, Selden J. Carter, Jr. and her children, Laureetta C. Carter of Edmonds, WA, Daniel E. Carter of Independence, KS, Catherine L. Stanley and husband Stephen of Columbia, MO and Sandra E. Hoppe and husband Douglas of Cleveland, OH. Janette is survived by her sisters Shirley Parker and her husband Herbert of Naples, FL and Marilyn Braun and her husband Victor of Oro Valley, AZ. Also surviving are six grandchildren and four great grandchildren.

Funeral service will be held 10:00 AM Monday at the First Baptist Church of Webb City, Missouri with Rev. Dr. Joe Dan Fowler, Rev. Bob Easton and Rev. Ron Woody officiating. Burial will follow at Mt. Hope Cemetery. The family will have a visitation Sunday from 2:00 – 3:00 PM at the Simpson Funeral Home in Webb City. In lieu of flowers, the family prefers memorials be made to the Children’s Ministry at First Baptist Church in care of the funeral home.
