Dorothy Dean "Dot" Courtney, age 94, Galena, Kansas, passed away on Friday, July 28, 2017 at Galena Nursing Center after a lengthy illness.
Dot was born May 15, 1923 in Joplin, daughter of the late Cecil Decatur Houston and Opal Kohler Houston. She graduated from Carl Junction High School, and married Roy E. Courtney on November 22, 1944 in Columbus, Kansas. She enjoyed being Roy's helper with the farm work, and was of the Baptist faith. The couple moved back to the Joplin area in 1995 after retiring.
In addition to her parents, Dot was preceded in death by her husband Roy, June 19, 2015; sister, Billie Mitchell, and her twin sister, Virginia Mae Courtney; niece, Cindy Meyer, and a nephew, Thomas G. Courtney.
She is survived by nephews, Robert Mitchell and wife Denise of Kansas City, Missouri, Morris Courtney and wife Kyong of Las Vegas, Nevada, and Bill Courtney and wife Connie of Carthage, Missouri; niece, Reba Purcell of Oologah, Oklahoma; several great- nieces and nephews.
Graveside services will be Tuesday, August 1, 2017 at 3:00 p.m. in Glen Wild Cemetery, Cleveland, Missouri, with Bill Courtney officiating and family sharing memories. Her family will be serving as pallbearers.
Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Parker Mortuary.
