Phyllis Dalton

Phylis M. Dalton, 92, Carthage, MO, passed away Thursday, July 20, 2017 at her home. Phylis Margaret Smith was born November 3, 1924 in Jasper County, MO to the late C.L. “Lonnie” Smith and Della A. (Seybert) Smith. She graduated from Sarcoxie High School, Class of 1943. She then attended Joplin Junior College for two years and finished at Franklin Tech as a Nurse Practitioner. Phylis moved to California in 1959 and worked as a licensed vocational nurse at St. Joseph’s Hospital, Stockton, CA for 20 years, before returning back to Carthage in June of 1981. She was a member of the Landmark Missionary Baptist Church, Carthage.

Survivors include one brother, Clyde E. Smith, Kansas City, MO, two nieces, and two nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, and two sisters, Irene Heisten and Helen Bickner.

Visitation will be held 1:30 pm, Wednesday, July 26, 2017 at Landmark Missionary Baptist Church, 803 W. Chestnut, Carthage, MO 64836, with a service following the visitation at 2:30 pm. Rev. Loma Burrell will officiate. Interment will follow the service at Park Cemetery, Carthage. Memorial gifts are suggested to Landmark Missionary Baptist Church in care of Knell Mortuary, 308 W.   1. Phyllis was my landlady for about 10 years. She was great to rent from, and we were friends even after I moved on from her apartment. She was generous, overly at times, and I could not pay rent without staying for a long conversation and a snack. When I had kids, I would bring them over for visits and she would just marvel over them. When she passed, I had no way of contact about it, so I missed her service and didn't know about it until a few months after. I still think of her to this day.

  2. She and I were friends with me growing up. I’d call her and she was always bubbly and happy. I will never forget her. I love you. You were like the relative I never had. Thank you for being so good to me growing up and allowing me to be a part of your life.
