LaVerne C. McCoy, 95, of Carthage, MO, was called home by our Heavenly Father on July 23, 2017, to be reunited with her beloved husband, Vernon “Mac” McCoy.
LaVerne was born on Dec. 3, 1921 in Salem, MO to Oscar and Ola Hutchison. After high school, she traveled to see the sights of Niagara Falls, sought employment in Hollywood, CA, worked in the ship yards of Tacoma, WA., then moved to Sioux Falls, SD. She returned to St. Louis during WWII to work in the Defense Plant making shell casings. LaVerne and her mother, Ola, moved into a boarding house owned by Edith McCoy. It was there she met Vernon “Mac” McCoy. They were married on August 30, 1947.
In 1951, Mac and LaVerne moved to Carthage, MO, where he worked in Lab and X-Ray at McCune-Brooks Hospital. LaVerne worked for Smith Brothers Manufacturing, “Big Smith”, as a Key Punch Operator in payroll for 24 years. After retirement, she volunteered at “Nearly New” thrift store.
LaVerne was an avid Scrabble player. She especially looked forward to nights Dave & Betty McCoy would come over to play. In 1966, Mac & LaVerne built her dream home at 1645 Hazel, Carthage. She presided there until May 2017 when she moved to Phoenix, AZ, to live with her daughter, Donna.
Vernon “Mac” McCoy preceded her in death in 2012. They had just celebrated their 65th Wedding Anniversary. Also preceding her in death were her parents, one brother, Floyd Hutchison, and two sisters, Louise Kell and Unice Hutchison.
Surviving is daughter Donna McCoy Shay (Doug) of Phoenix, AZ, Brother and Sister In-Laws, Dave & Betty McCoy of Carthage, MO, Brother In-Laws, Doyle McCoy of Ferguson, MO, and Dallas McCoy of Creve Coure, MO., Sister In-Laws, Joyce Schoenfeld of Beecher City, IL and Jean Wooten of Scio, OR, nephew, Ted Kell of Burlington, TX, 15 nieces & nephews, Niece, Debbie Morgan of Carthage, Grandson, Bill Shay (Carol) of Phoenix, AZ, 3 Great-Granddaughters Kellie Meza (Shane) of Phoenix, AZ, Kristie Medeles (David), and Liz Shay of Phoenix, AZ, and 3 Great-Great Granddaughters, Makayla Meza, Faith Meza, and Alaina Medeles, who affectingly called her “Burn Burn”. Jack and Lucy Grebe, of Joplin, were just like family.
Graveside services will be held 10 am, Saturday, July 29, 2017 at Park Cemetery, Carthage, MO. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Hospice of the Valley in care of Knell Mortuary, 308 W. Chestnut, Carthage, MO 64836. Online condolences may be expressed through www.knellmortuary.com. Arrangements are under the direction and personal care of Knell Mortuary.
