Joan Schenk, age 85, Joplin, passed away Monday, July 17, 2017 at Joplin Gardens after a long illness.
Joan was born February 28, 1932 in Pittsburg, Kansas to the late Millard Givens and Ruth Snyder Givens. Her family relocated to Bellwood, IL, where they lived for many years. While in Bellwood, she married Bud Schenk on January 26, 1952, and worked for Proviso East High School. They eventually moved to Chelmsford, MA, where they lived until 1978.
In 1978, Joan moved to Joplin, where she graduated from Missouri Southern State University. Thereafter, she worked as a coordinator for the March of Dimes. She was a past board member of the Joplin Family Y and Freeman Advantage. Joan served as president of the Business and Professional Women and the American Association of University Women.
Joan was also a member of the Heartland Doll Club; participated in the Tradition of Trees; Soroptomist International; Women's Club of Joplin; Tau Delta Omega Sorority; BBI Investment Group; Garden Club of Massachusetts and was a longtime participant in the Joplin Bridge Group.
An avid collector of many things, especially bears and dolls, Joan loved to travel and visited sixteen countries. She will be missed by all who knew her.
Survivors include cousins, Alan and Judy Priddy of Joplin, Jim and Bev Zerkel of Joplin, Keith and Terri Snyder of Carl Junction, and several other extended family members and many friends.
Memorial services will be Friday at 1:00 p.m. at Parker Mortuary. Rev. Bob Simon will officiate. The family will receive friends following the services at the mortuary. Interment will follow at a later date at Chapel Hill Cemetery, Oakbrook Terrace, Illinois. Memorial contributions may be made to the AAUW Scholarship Fund, in care of Parker Mortuary.
Cremation arrangements are under the direction of Parker Mortuary.
