Eugene W. Petersen, age 87, of Joplin, Mo., passed away on Saturday July 8, 2017, at Mercy Hospital, following an illness.
Eugene was born on January 1, 1930 in Manhattan, Ks., the son of the late Aaron Eugene and Dora (Hinkle) Petersen. He has been a resident of Joplin since 2004. He served in the United States Navy. He worked as a machinery consultant for Carman Machines and was a self-employed machinist. He enjoyed making ink pens, bird houses and feeders, and all types of woodworking. He also, enjoyed trout fishing.
He married Melba Mauck on February 11, 1950 in Marshalltown, Ia., and she survives. Additional survivors include; two sons, Larry Petersen, Lowell, Ar., and Darrell Petersen, Joplin; one daughter, Lois Henderson and husband William, Sarcoxie, Mo.; one brother, Harold L. Petersen, Creston, Ia.; two sisters, Reta Bruene, Boone, Ia., and Mary Krostoska, Marshalltown, Ia.; four grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a son, Thomas Petersen; two brothers, Gerald Petersen and Francis “Bud” Petersen; four sisters, Shirley O’Connor, Dora Johnson, Betty Nicholson, and Edna Mae Griffin; and a daughter-in-law, Denise Petersen.
Funeral services will be 11:00 a.m. Wednesday at Mason-Woodard Chapel. Burial will be in Mount Hope Cemetery.
The visitation will be 6-7 p.m. Tuesday at Mason-Woodard Mortuary. Memorial contributions may be given to the Petersen Family in care of the mortuary.
