Saundra J. (Humble) Schooley, age 75, formerly of Quapaw, OK, left this earth to join her Heavenly Father on Friday, April 3, 2020, with her daughter (Tamara) and granddaughter (Katelyn) by her side in Baxter Springs, KS.
Saundra was born on October 22, 1944, in Cherokee, KS, the daughter of the late Col. Walter and Helen (Johnson) Humble. She married Tommy Schooley on March 14, 1965, in Pittsburg, KS. Saundra attended Southeast High school (class of 1962) in Cherokee, KS.
After graduation, she went on to attend Pittsburg State College of Cosmetology. After college, she did hair alongside her sister Twilla and later ran her own salon.
She left Cosmetology after being diagnosed with a cervical rib and entered the field of law enforcement at Crawford County Sheriff’s Department. Law enforcement led her to accept a position with the University of Kansas Police Department and relocate to Lawrence, KS, where she received recognition for her work during an active shooter situation. She left law enforcement and held numerous positions in management, car sales, medical billing, and patient advocacy before retiring in 2013.
Her joys in life were spending time with her children and grandchildren, watching her beloved KU Jayhawks Men’s Basketball, dancing, and having a Pepsi and Snickers with her good friend Lila Forrest (Farlington).
She was preceded in death by her father and mother, Col. Walter and Helen Humble (Pittsburg), sisters: Twilla Standlee (Carl Junction, MO), Norma Husarik (Chicago Hts., IL), Betty Kalusha (Frontenac, KS), Lorene Mein (Girard, KS); brothers-in-law: Brian Palmer (Leawood, KS), Frank Husarik ( Chicago Hts., IL), and Leonard Mein (Girard, KS).
She is survived by one son, Jeff Schooley and wife Jennifer (Boise, ID), two daughters: Tamara Morey and husband Wayne (Quapaw, OK), and Kelli Stevens and husband Tim (Kennewick, WA); one brother, Walter “Buddy” Humble and wife Connie (Girard, KS); one sister, Shirley Palmer (Leawood, KS); two brothers-in-law: Don Kalusha (Frontenac, KS), Dan Standlee (Carl Junction, MO); Grandchildren: Joshua Schooley and his wife Jaina (Pittsburg, KS), Veronica McManigal and husband David (Golden, CO), Katelyn Schooley (Miami, OK) Dawson and Asher Morey (Quapaw, OK), Morgan Morey and wife Abby (Quapaw, OK), Brianna Sooter (Quapaw, OK), Taylor Williams (Kennewick, WA), Courtney Morre and husband Zack (Kennewick, WA); 7 great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.
A celebration of life will be scheduled at a later date when friends and family are allowed to travel and gather.
