Shirley Steele

(From Mason-Woodard Mortuary)

Shirley Ann Steele, Joplin, Missouri passed away, Saturday, December 5, 2020, at the age of 84.

Shirley was born in Joplin, MO, on April 15, 1936, to the late Russell Corbin Witmer and Helen Genevieve (Gould) Witmer.

She married Clifford John Steele on December 25, 1952, they had three sons; David, John and Danny Steele. She was a lifelong resident of the Duenweg/Joplin area.

She retired from Missouri Southern State University after 17 years. Shirley was a loved member of The Sheep Shed and enjoyed gathering with the EPIC Youth Group on Sunday evenings.

Shirley never met a stranger. When you walked through her door, you were greeted with a smile and the question "Are you hungry? We got plenty to eat." If you left hungry, you only had yourself to blame. Clifford and her boys were the center of her world. She loved them fully and mightily. When the boys married, it only made the Steele family even more complete. The more the merrier, especially if games were involved. Cards, dice, dominoes, it didn't matter to her and she usually won, even if that meant cheating.

In addition to her parents and husband, Shirley is preceded in death by one son Danny, sister Marry Williams, brother Gary L. Witmer, Sr. and brother-in-law Lauren Hankins, Sr.

Shirley is survived by her sons; David, & wife Diana. John, & wife Linda. Her sister, Norma Hankins. Seven grandchildren; Greg Steele, & wife Deanna, Jessica Persinger, & husband Matt, Cliff Steele, Cara Higginbotham, Dave Steele, & wife Lindsay, Michael Thompson, & wife Yvonne, and Sherryl Steele. Eighteen great grandchildren, and one great great grandson. Many nieces, nephews, extended family and an abundance of friends. She loved them all deeply and wholeheartedly.

Funeral services will be held on Thursday, December 10, 2020 at 1:00 pm at the Mason-Woodard Mortuary in Joplin with burial to follow at Ozark Memorial Park Cemetery in Joplin. The family will receive friends for a time of visitation on Wednesday, December 9th from 6:00 pm until 7:00 pm. Memorial contributions may be made to the National Kidney Foundation or to the American Diabetes Association and may be entrusted to the mortuary.
