(From Derfelt Funeral Home)Micheal Neil Skahan, age 88, passed away at 2:58 pm, Saturday, February 18, 2023 at Mercy Hospital, Columbus, KS following an illness, due to cardiac arrest after an elective surgery.
Mr. Skahan was born March 13, 1934 in Turck, KS. His parents were Thomas D. and Margaret (Rae) Skahan. The Skahans moved to Columbus in 1944, and with the exception of his military service, Micheal has lived in Columbus all of his life.
He was a Purple Heart veteran of the Vietnam War. He retired from the United States Army with the rank of Lt. Colonel.
Micheal was a member of St Rose of Lima Catholic Church, Columbus. He was a member of Knights of Columbus, the American Legion, and the VFW.
Micheal was married to Polly Ann Howard on October 16, 1954 in Pittsburg, KS. She passed away October 7, 2008.
He was also preceded in death by his parents, one son, Micheal Skahan II, three brothers, Thomas R. Skahan, Eugene E. Skahan, and Clifford J. Skahan, and three sisters, Mary Margaret Hannaman, Donna F. Loeb, and Deana F. McGluew.
He is survived by two sons, Edward Skahan, and Thomas D. Skahan (wife, Tammy), all of Noel, MO; two daughters, Karen Skahan (husband, Ward Hammond), Lowell, AR, and Lynda Warren, Fayetteville, AR; one brother, James Alan Skahan, Columbus, KS; 9 grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren, and 4 great-great grandchildren.
He was entrusted to Derfelt Funeral Home, Columbus, KS for cremation.
The family will honor his life on Saturday, March 11, 2023 at St Rose of Lima Catholic Church, Columbus, KS. Rosary prayer service will be at 9:30 am. Funeral mass will be at 10:00 am. Following the service, a meal will be provided at the Parish Hall. Burial is scheduled at 1:30 pm, at St Bridget’s Cemetery, Scammon, KS.
