(From Thornhill-Dillon Mortuary) Mary Erselene Kennedy-Hamlin, age 86 of Joplin, passed away on Tuesday, June 27, 2023 at Mercy Hospital in Joplin following a sudden illness. Erselene was born April 11, 1937 in Louisburg, Kansas to the late Ersel ‘Curly’ Mapes and Mary Genevieve Smith Mapes.
Ersie lived her life in Joplin and graduated from Joplin High with the class of 1955. She spent a lot of time with her friends, bowling, water skiing and traveling. She loved to spoil her family and friends with her home cooked meals and desserts.
She Co-Owned and operated Southtown Cleaners with her late husband, Gene, where she was skilled at tailoring and alterations. Ersie was a volunteer in the community with the Mercy Auxiliary, historian for the hospital and the Class of ‘55 reunion committee. She was also a member of Park Plaza Christian Church of Joplin.
Other than her parents, Ersie is preceded in death by husbands, Francis ‘Gene’ Kennedy, passing in 2004 and Bob Hamlin, passing in 2014; three sisters, Maxine Jeffers, Nina Smith and Nancy Jones.
Surviving family include, a sister, Eva Jean Mayfield of Springfield, MO; daughters, Angela Hebner of Pittsburg, KS. and Susan Dickey (Mark) of Albuquerque, NM.; grandchildren, Amanda Messer (Gerald) of Pittsburg; Dylan Long (Lauren) of Eliot, Maine; great-grandchildren, Bronwyn and Zane Messer; godson Edward Hanna and step children, Rob Hamlin (Marian) of Joplin, Cindy Smith of Oregon, Cheryl Fussell of Joplin and Betty Imme of CA, as well as numerous nieces, nephews, other step children and extended family who were all very special to Ersie.

Family will be receiving friends Monday, July 3, 2023 starting at 10:00 a.m. followed by a funeral service at 11:00 a.m. at the Thornhill-Dillon Chapel. Burial to follow at Ozark Memorial Park Cemetery in Joplin.
Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to the care of Thornhill-Dillon Mortuary, Joplin, Missouri.
