Justin Mitchell

(From Thornhill-Dillon Mortuary)

On Tuesday, March 27, 2018, Justin Leroy Mitchell went to be with his Lord and Savior after a lengthy illness. He was a loving husband, father, poppy, son, brother and great friend to many. He valiantly fought cancer for five years and never gave up on life. He fought for not only himself, but for his family who admired his willingness to fight and never give up.

Justin, age 58, was born in Hutchinson, Kansas, on August 24, 1959, to Bert and Carolyn Mitchell. On July 10, 1982, he married the love of his life, Barbara Stewart. They were married for 35 years and had nine children together. He loved the Lord, reading his Bible and enjoyed talking about his faith. He was a great storyteller of recent trips in the outdoors catching fish, chasing deer and shooting ducks. Every buck was “THIS big and THIS tall”. He once caught a large mouth bass longer than his arm and missed a double drop tine buck that would have made him famous.

He loved spending time with his children and grandchildren every week at family dinner. He was an avid outdoorsman with a passion for hunting and fishing. He enjoyed spending time with friends and family on the river back, field edge, tree stand and duck blind. He was a hunting and fishing mentor to many and enjoyed sharing his 50 plus years of outdoor experience with others. His family and friends have countless memories of successful hunting and fishing trips together and they will always think of him as they watch the sun rise.

He was preceded in death by his father, Bert Mitchell; and his mentor, Jim Clark.

He is survived by his wife, Barbara Mitchell; their nine children, Tyler, Kami and her husband, Jeremiah, Melissa and her husband, Vincent, Matt, Ethan and his wife, Denesa, Fisher, Madison, Hunter and Elijah; nine grandchildren; his mother, Carolyn, and her husband, Tom; his brother, Jeff; his sister, Jennifer, and her husband, Richard; his best friend, MJ; along with countless other family members and friends.

A private graveside service will take place at Osborne Memorial Cemetery in Joplin, Missouri, with Pastor Cody Walker officiating. Arrangements are under the personal care and direction of Thornhill-Dillon Mortuary, Joplin, Missouri.

“It is well, it is well, with my soul.”
