Mabel Ruth Bird, age 96, Carl Junction, passed away at 8:20 a.m. Friday, March 30, 2018 at National Health Care Center.
Mabel was born May 23, 1921 in Liberal, Missouri to the late Carl Collins and Della Young Collins.
Mabel owned and operated a beauty shop out of her home in Gatesville, Texas for fifteen years. She then worked twelve years at the Mountain View Unit of the Texas Department of Corrections in Gatesville.
For eighteen years, Mabel volunteered at the Lake Whitney Medical Center. She was named Volunteer of the Year at the Retired and Senior Volunteer Program's annual event, where she was presented a medal of merit and certificate of recognition from Congressman Bill Flores.
Mabel was not one to sit around. Well into her nineties, she still mowed her own yard, washed her own car, cleaned her house and worked out to Richard Simmons videos three times a week. She will be missed by all who knew her.
Survivors include three children, Ruth Dryer and husband, Cotton, Oglesby, Texas, Joy Morris and husband, Ron Mitchell, Joplin, Richard Smith and wife, Pat, Carl Junction; one brother, Harold Bowen, Katy, Texas; eight grandchildren; and several great and great great grandchildren.
In addition to her parents, Mabel was preceded in death by her first husband, James Cecil Smith, Sr.; her son, James Cecil Smith, Jr.; and a great grandson, Jensen Smith.
Graveside services are planned for Wednesday at 10:00 a.m. at Carl Junction Cemetery. Kyle Beverlin will officiate.
