James “Jim” Gerald Cowan, 68, of Neosho, MO, passed away on June 11, 2018, following a short and gallant fight against pancreatic cancer.
Throughout his recent months battling cancer, Jim managed a smile and a warm disposition, hallmarks of who he was and his knowledge that he was going home to Heaven.
Jim was born February 6, 1950 in Mountain Home, AR. His parents and siblings moved from their Arkana home to a farm near Stella, MO, just after Christmas 1956, where Jim grew up, attending schools at Stella, and later Triway. Following high school, he worked for a brief time at Skelly Oil Company in Tulsa before joining the U.S. Air Force, serving a tour of duty in Vietnam.
Upon returning from military duty, Jim settled in Northwest Arkansas and some time later in Little Rock. Subsequently, he working in the medical profession as a registered respiratory therapist, ultimately serving in hospitals in Kansas and Missouri. Along the way, he taught respiratory therapy at Red River Technical College in Hope, AR.
An avid sportsman, Jim loved the outdoors, nature, and his Harley. He became involved as a Boy Scout leader, assisting troops where his son, Wesley, was a member. Wesley became an Eagle Scout under the tutelage of his dad.
Survivors include, in addition to Wesley, another son, Thomas James; his mother, Phyllis Cowan of Neosho; his siblings and their families, Nancy Broadway of Stanton, TX; Janet Cowan of Holiday Island, AR; David Cowan of Houston, TX; and Donald Cowan of Long Beach, CA.
A celebration of life service will be held June 30 at 4 p.m. at Oakridge Bible Missionary Church, 2876 Oakridge Extension, Neosho. The Referend Joe Oswalt will officiate. Friends and family are invited to attend the memorial.
