Virginia Dailey

(From Gorman-Scharpf Funeral Home)

Virginia Sue Dailey, 91, of Springfield, passed away December 21, 2021. She was a native of Springfield. She was the youngest daughter of Dr. and Mrs. Lawrence E. Pummill of Springfield who preceded her in death, as did her only sister, Peggy Pummill Morrow of Carthage. She was the wife of Donald C. Dailey for 68 years, who preceded her in death in 2019.

She was a graduate of Greenwood High School and Southwest Missouri State College. She taught two years in Austin, Texas. In college she received several awards including being named to two honor societies.

She married Donald C. Dailey in 1951. She was a member of the Springfield Junior League and served as a volunteer in several civic organizations. Virginia served on the Boards of the PEO, the YWCA, the Southwest Missouri Museum Associates, and the Drury College Auxiliary. She was a founding member and Vice President of the Board of the Missouri State University Foundation.

She loved to travel and with her husband visited many countries around the world. Although several operations interrupted her life, she always had a positive attitude. She appreciated every day and constantly encouraged those suffering from deadly diseases to fight to return to good health. Her background as a member of a teaching family inspired her to help organize Missouri State University Foundation which now awards many scholarships to aspiring students every year.

She was an avid golfer and belonged to the Hickory Hills Country Club and to Ironwood Country Club in Palm Desert, California. She and her husband had resided in California during the winter months.

She was the mother of Dr. John C. Dailey of Paris, Arkansas and Steve W. Dailey of Overland Park, Kansas. She is also survived by a daughter-in-law, LaKay Dailey, a niece, Marilyn Morrow Finney, and two nephews, Dr. David Morrow and Andrew Morrow.

The family would like to extend their appreciation to Good Shepherd Hospice and Cox Health @ Home for their compassionate care for Virginia during this difficult time.

Informal Visitation will be from 1:00 – 5:00 PM on Sunday, December 26, 2021 at Gorman-Scharpf Funeral Home. Private Family Graveside Services will be at a later date in Hazelwood Cemetery.
