(From Mason-Woodard Mortuary)Dora Cervantes, age 68, Joplin, Missouri passed away on Saturday, July 15, 2023, surrounded by her family at her daughter’s home following an illness.
She was born July 29, 1954, in Valle Hermoso, Mexico to Juan Antonio and Evi Chavez Parra.
Dora was a baker and a talented cake decorator; she owned her own bakery for many years. Most recently, she retired from a 20-year career in the bakery department at Walmart. She also enjoyed arts and crafts, thrifting, talking on the phone to her sisters, and going out to breakfast with her family. Her smile and laugh were contagious.
Dora loved to spend time with Jose and Lisa volunteering at various non-profit organizations. Whether it was getting up at the crack of dawn to cook and serve breakfast with Jose at Watered Gardens or addressing thousands of envelopes, with her beautiful handwriting, with Lisa for mailers for House of Hope or The Alliance. She would sort greeting cards at ARM Prison Outreach International and she would weave Walmart sacks into pallets for the homeless.
She is survived by one son, Jose Cervantes Jr., of Joplin, Missouri, one daughter, Dora “Lisa” Bushnell (Steven), of Oronogo, Missouri; three brothers and three sisters, all of Houston, Texas. She is also survived by six grandchildren, Jordan Cervantes (Hannah), Sabrina Bates (Brett), Christian Cervantes, Jasmine Casarez, Emma Bushnell, and Evi Bushnell; three great- grandchildren; and many extended family members.
Funeral services will be held at 2:00 pm on Saturday, July 22, 2023, at Mason-Woodard Mortuary in Joplin, Missouri with Greg Walker officiating. The family will receive friends at 1:00 pm prior to the service.
Graveside services will be held at 11:00 am on Tuesday, July 25, 2023, at the Ozark Memorial Park Cemetery in Joplin, Missouri.
