Elsie Capps

Elsie Capps, 96, entered into rest on July 20, 2023 at Liberty Hospital in Liberty Missouri. Elsie was born in Newcastle Upon Tyne, England on November 2, 1926. 

She was evacuated as a child, from Newcastle during World War II and spent that time in Blenkinsopp Hall in Northeast England. As a teen she served in The Womens Land Army. While in the UK she met and married James Capps. She enjoyed traveling around Europe and the United States where Jim was stationed.








After Jim retired from the military they made their home in Neosho, Missouri. Elsie worked many years as a cook for the Neosho Public Schools and Newton County Jail.

She is survived by her son David Capps and his wife LouAnn, a daughter Jenny Leffel and her husband Chris. Her grandson John Neale and wife Sarah, granddaughter Emily Harris and husband Austin. Her sister Florence (Flo) Clifford and husband David, and numerous nieces and nephews in England and the US. She had the great pleasure of knowing her great-grandson Luca Colombini as well as adopted great-grandson Ethan Smith. She is also survived by special friends that she considered family, Paul and Jan Kliethermes, Tim and DiAnna Wages and Beth Smith.

She is preceded in death by her husband Jim Capps in 1968. Her granddaughter Gina Colombini in 2021 and her sisters Lillian and Edna.








Elsie was always concerned with others well-being and had a way of making people feel special. Elsie was an avid reader until losing her eyesight to Macular Degeneration. She was proud of her British heritage and always enjoyed a good cup of hot tea.

A come and go memorial will be held from 5-7pm on Monday August 14, 2023 at The Weston Place event center on the square in Neosho, MO.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the American Macular Degeneration Foundation.
