Lonnie VanVolkinburg

Lonnie Gene VanVolkinburg, age 90, passed away peacefully in his home in Joplin, MO, surrounded by family on October 17, 2024.

Lonnie was born on August 25, 1934, to Lon and Vera VanVolkinburg.

He served our great nation in the United States Navy and many of his descendants followed in his footsteps, choosing to serve in the armed forces, as well.








On November 24, 1956, Lonnie married his loving wife, Dorothy Francis Luke, and together built a family of five wonderful children.

He worked for many decades at Fleming Foods, never missing a single day of work, even while going through cancer treatments. Through his leadership positions he was instrumental in advancing the education, healthcare and housing for individuals with developmental disabilities in the Joplin area. He was a long-time member of Grace Baptist Church where he remained a dedicated, active Deacon. He enjoyed fishing, bowling, golf, ping pong and singing, especially at the table.

Preceding him in death are his parents, four siblings, Jerry Thurston, Bill Thurston, Mildred Waller, and Saundra Thornbergh, one son Charles VanVolkinburg and two grandsons, Ryan VanVolkinburg and Braden VanVolkinburg.








He is survived by his wife Dorothy, four children: Lonnie Jr. and wife Carol Ann of Joplin, William and wife Dr. Lesley VanVolkinburg of Tulsa, OK, Daniel of Tulsa, OK, and Dr. Cheryl VanVolkinburg and partner Alicia Morales of Dallas, TX, 10 grandchildren, and eight great grandchildren.

Funeral service has been scheduled for 10:00 am on Tuesday, October 22 at Grace Baptist Church in Joplin, MO. The family will receive friends and visitors from 6:00 to 7:00 pm on Monday, October 21, at Mason-Woodard Chapel in Joplin, MO. Graveside service to follow at Forest Park Cemetery with military honors. Pallbearers will be: Britton Campbell, Daniel John VanVolkinburg, Noah VanVolkinburg, Tyler VanVolkinburg, Bill VanVolkinburg, II, and Bill Luke.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Grace Baptist Church in care of the funeral home.
