(From Mason-Woodard Mortuary)Dr. Carolyn Mae Hale, 85, of Joplin, Missouri went to be with her Lord Jesus on February 7, 2026. She was born in Ohio on October 12, 1940, to John Lee Hale and Edith Golden Knore Hale.
Carolyn graduated from Portsmouth East High School Class of 1958. She is an alumna of Abilene Christian University and received her Ph.D. from the University of Oklahoma in Intercultural Communication. Her 53-year career took her all over the United States, as well as to Europe and Asia. She retired from Missouri Southern State University in 2012 after teaching there as a professor of communications for 15 ½ years.
Carolyn mentored many exchange students and traveled to Ireland and Northern India with students through the McCaleb Initiative for Peace (MSSU). She was highly respected and influenced generations of young lives through her instruction, mentorship, and thoughtful dialogue.
Carolyn loved painting landscapes and flora, enjoyed writing poetry, and was a member of the MSSU Choral Society. Her other passions included taking care of her cats and reading books.
She was a faithful member of Christ’s Community Church in Joplin and loved her Sunday school friendships. Carolyn was also active with Bible Study Fellowship.

Her burial will be in Wheelersburg, Ohio.
