Dewey Brattin

Dewey D. Brattin, age 81 of Joplin, Mo. passed away on Thursday September 18, 2014 in the comfort of his home following a long battle with cancer.

 Dewey was born on June 13, 1933 in Rocky Comfort, Mo., the son of Jess and Jewett (Goosetree) Brattin. He has been a lifetime area resident, proudly serving his country as part of the US Army. Dewey worked at Eagle Picher for 42 years, manufacturing battery parts for aerospace missiles and the NASA Apollo Lunar Lander. He attended Blendville Christian Church. He had a love for the outdoors, especially fishing. He refereed basketball for 27 years and was inducted into the Joplin Hall of Fame for his devotion to the game. 

He married Idabell Boyd on March 15, 1957 in Joplin, she survives. Additional survivors include one son; Warren Brattin, one granddaughter; Ashden Smith, and one great-grandson, Easton Smith. Dewey was preceded in death by his parents, two sons at birth, two brothers and four sisters.

 Funeral services have been scheduled for 10:00 a.m. Monday, September 22, 2014 at the Mason-Woodard Chapel, with B.A. Austin and Rick Bushnell, Ministers, officiating. Burial will follow at Ozark Memorial Park Cemetery. The family will receive friends during a time of visitation from 2 to 3 p.m. on Sunday.

Steven Sandy

Steven C. Sandy, 71, of Easton, PA passed away due to complications associated with dementia on Sunday, September 14, 2014. Born in Carl Junction, MO on September 28, 1942, he was the son of Herbert and Marguerite (Milleson) Sandy and the youngest of four siblings.

Steven graduated from Joplin Junior College in 1962 and went on to attend the University of Alabama for his undergraduate studies and the University of Southern California for post-graduate work. Upon graduating from USC in 1966 he was hired by Ingersol Rand and worked in Los Angeles, San Francisco and the United Kingdom before settling in the Lehigh Valley and eventually becoming the President of Ingersol Rand’s Pump Group.

At various points, he served as Chairman of the Valve Manufacturers Association and a Director of the Hydraulic Institute. After breaking away from Ingersol Rand in 1990 (he was featured in a Fortune magazine cover story on the subject), he presided over Gimple Corporation in Langhorne, PA before co-founding Gateshead Partners, a private investment group, in Doylestown, PA.

An avid tennis player, biker and skier, Steven was passionate about fitness and the outdoors, enjoying long walks and traveling with his wife, Denise. He adamantly cheered on the St. Louis Cardinals, San Francisco 49ers and Penn State Nittany Lions. A wine connoisseur and collector, he often had trouble drinking his prized wines himself, but was never abstemious when it came to sharing vintage Bordeauxs among family and friends.

He is survived by his wife of 27 years, Denise (Ahlum) Sandy of Easton, PA; son, Matthew Sandy of Denver, CO and sisters Lilly Mae Ash, Audrey Ward and Jeanette Verbryck of Carl Junction, MO.

Services will be held 2:00 PM Friday (Sept. 19) in Cathedral Church of the Nativity, 321 Wyandotte Hill, Bethlehem, PA with a calling period from 1 to 2 PM in the church. Interment will be in Pleasant Hill Cemetery, Pleasant Valley, PA. The Ashton Funeral Home, Easton, PA is handling the arrangements.

Joanna Green

Joanna Eloise (Mathiews) Green, age 89, of Joplin, MO passed away Sunday, September 14, 2014, 8 days shy of her 90th birthday. Joanna resided at Spring River Christian Village following a year of prolonged illness. Joanna was born to William “Tom” and Josephine (Mossman) Mathiews September 22, 2014 in Galena, KS.

Joanna married Richard P. Green, the love of her life, on October 4, 1942 in Joplin. They were married 69 years, and 7 months, when he passed away on May 12, 2012.

Joanna attended Galena public schools all 12 years, graduating in 1942. She received an Associate of Arts degree from Joplin Junior College (now MSSC) in 1954, a Bachelor of Science degree in Elementary Education, and a Masters of Science degree in Reading in 1964, both from Pittsburg State Teachers College (now Pittsburg State University). She taught fifth grade in Joplin Public Schools for 27 years at Stapleton, Emerson, and Irving schools, retiring 1985.

Joanna loved her Lord and took great delight in serving Him by singing in the choir for 40 years and teaching God’s Word to children and adults. She was currently a member of Eastvue Baptist Church. She felt her legacy was the children she taught and/or directed in Harmony Heights Baptist Church where she was a charter member. She directed the Youth Department for 30 years, Children’s Bible Memory, and VBS several years both in her home church and in Spring River Baptist Association.

After retirement Joanna became an avid volunteer. She served the Missouri Retired Teachers Association as Vice President and President for two terms. She dedicated untold hours to Crosslines Food Pantry, American Rehabilitation Ministries, Election Judge, and Joplin Genealogy Library.

She was preceded in death by her husband; two parents; three sisters: Opal King, Weda Rathburn, and Jewell Mathiews; and two brothers: Richard Mathiews and Junior Thomas Mathiews.

Survivors include her two children Dr. Richard P. Green, II, and wife Nora of San Antonio, TX, and Dr. Cynthia A. Green, of Dover, DE; grandchildren: Richard P. Green, III, Matthew W. Green, Christin C. Green; great-grandchildren R. Paul Green, IV, Joshua Green, Wesley Green, II, Zachary Green, and Emily Green; and former daughter-in-law Gloria A. Green. Adopted family: Maryella Sterling, daughter, David and Kim Sterling, grandson, and Dale and Catherine Sterling, grandson, and their six children all of Walker, LA.

Services will be at 1:00 P.M. Friday, September 19, 2014 at Mason-Woodard Chapel. Dr. Tim Sumner will officiate. Burial will follow the services at Ozark Memorial Park Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 12 PM until service time at the mortuary.

The family has asked that in lieu of flowers, memorial contributions be given to the Gideon International Bible Society in care of the Mortuary.

Susan Poulson

Susan Elizabeth Poulson age 73 of Joplin, Mo passed away Friday September 12, 2014 following a short illness.

 She was born September 14, 1940 in Southwest City, Mo to George and Emma Atkinson Spencer. She was a homemaker most of her life. She did work at the Joplin Shirt Factory and she attended Crowder College.

Susan married Donald Poulson on February 13, 1977 in Miami, Ok and he survives. Additional survivors include 2 sons; Charles Bowers, Joseph Bowers both of Joplin, Mo, 3 daughters; Gina Smotherman, Crystal Poulson, Trisha Meyers, 2 brothers; Joe Spencer, Everett Spencer, 1 sister; Mable Martin, 22 grandchildren, 27 great grandchildren, and 1 great great grandchild. She was preceded in death by her parents, 2 daughters; Pamela Stacy, Tina Arehart, 1 brother Jim Spencer, and 2 sisters; Opal Lassiter and Sadie Spencer.

Fern Garrison

Fern K. Garrison, 95, passed away September 14, 2014 at her home in Carthage.

 Fern was born January 9, 1919 in Carthage, MO to Virgil Glenn Moss and Gladys E. “Royer” Moss. Fern was a lifetime Carthage resident. She worked at the Carmo Shoe factory and also worked at the M-C Jackson printing co. Fern was a member of the First Baptist Church of Carthage. Fern was a volunteer for the Elections, a member of the First Baptist Church Busy Fingers Quilting Group, the Eastern Star Eminice Chapter # 97, and the Morgan Heights Pep Club. 

Fern was united in marriage to Fred Garrison May 23, 1936 in Columbus, Kansas he preceded July 9, 1999. Fern is survived by four daughters Kay Abbiatti and husband Jack of Carthage, Robin Spry and husband Tom of Mt. Zion, IL. ,Roberta Cook and husband Phil of Alba, MO and Regina Burnett and husband Bob of Brenham, TX., fourteen grandchildren 34 great grandchildren and 3 great great grandchildren. Fern is preceded by her parents, husband and one son Larry A. Garrison July 3, 1984 and one sister Leota C. Moss January 6, 1941.

 The family would like to extend a special thanks to Hospice Compassus of Lamar and each of those involved with her care, Dr. Alden, Aids Terrelyn and Chris, RNs Kasha, Brooke, Kelly and Katrina, Chaplin Bud and social worker T.J.

 Services will be held 2:00 p.m. Wednesday September 17, 2014 at Ulmer Funeral Home. Visitation will be held at 1:00to 2:00 p.m. Wednesday prior to the services at Ulmer Funeral Home. Jackie Stanley

Jackie Ann Stanley age 65 of Carthage, Mo passed away Saturday September 13, 2014 following an illness.

 She was born August 4, 1949 in Denver, Co to Ralph and Lucy Garcia Roland. Jackie attended Grand Avenue Church of God and was a former employee of Bob’s Shoe Warehouse.

 She married Jack Stanley on April 27, 1967 and he survives. Additional survivors include one son; Sam Stanley, Carthage, Mo., one daughter; Tracy Bailey, Webb City, Mo, seven brothers; Michael Roland, Theron Roland, Gilbert Roland, Jerry Roland, John Roland, Bill Roland, Charles Roland, six grandchildren and 2 great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents and a brother Ralph Roland II. Jackie’s wish was to be cremated. 

Memorial services will be 2:00 p.m. Thursday September 18, 2014 at the Hedge-Lewis Funeral Home with Pastor Mike Withers officiating.

Drew Babcock

Drew Carlin Babcock, age 32 of Carthage, MO passed away Friday September 12, 2014. 

He was born on October 10, 1981 in Joplin, Mo the son of Jim Babcock and Cheryl Harrison. Drew was currently the manager of Family Video in Carthage, MO, loved camping, fishing, target shooting, Country Music and enjoyed cook outs with his great friends.

 Drew was preceded in death by his maternal grandmother Flora Jean Harrison. Survivors include his Dad Jim Babcock and fiancé Regina Goodwin and her daughter Morgan Amayo of Carthage, MO, mom Cheri Cantwell and husband Aaron of Carthage, MO, girlfriend Bethany Katzfey of Carthage, MO, a brother Joel Babcock and girlfriend Ashley Hendrix of Carthage, MO, paternal grandparents Jim and Eva Babcock, maternal grandfather Carroll Harrison, a nephew Aiden Babcock, two nieces Kendall and Emmerylyn Babcock; an uncle Phillip Harrison, two aunts: Teresa Henry and husband A.D. and Mary Riley and husband Steve; and a cousin Megan Henry and her son Kash. 

Memorial services will be held at 10:00 A.m. Tuesday September 16, 2014 at the Mason-Woodard Mortuary & Crematory with Steve Gannaway officiating. Inurnment to follow in the Osborne Cemetery Joplin, MO. The family with receive friends from 6:00 to 7:00 P.M. Monday September 15, 2014 at the Mortuary.
