Garland Bare

Orlando Garland Bare, age 87, of Joplin, passed away on Monday, April 3, 2017, at his home, surrounded by his family, following an illness.

Garland was born on January 7, 1930 in Batang, Tibet, the son of Missionaries Norton H. Bare and Lois (Nichols) Bare. He has been a resident of Joplin since 2008, moving here from Lincoln, Neb. He graduated from Lincoln Bible Institute with a BA degree. He graduated from Chiengmai University with his doctorate in Medicine in 1969 and received his diploma from King Phumipol of Thailand . He married Dorothy Dyson on January 13, 1951 in Lincoln, Il., together they raised three children. He was a member of Spring River Chapel.

Garland served as a Missionary in Thailand from 1951-1974, and as the Princess Mother’s Helicopter Doctor from 1971-1974. He then served the University of Nebraska as the Student Health Center Physician from 1974-1976. He authored several books, journals and articles. 

He is survived by his wife of sixty-six years, Dorothy Bare, Joplin; one son, Geoffrey Bare, Moberly, Mo.; two daughters. Lois Corinne Wilson, Omaha, Neb., and Grace Eileen Meester, Joplin; five grandchildren, and twelve great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by one brother Edgar Bare; and two sisters, Marguerite Fairbrother, and Maribel Bare.

Funeral service will be 11:00 a.m. Thursday at Mount Hope Church of Christ. Victor Knowles will officiate. Burial will be 1:00 p.m. Friday at Lincoln Memorial Cemetery in Lincoln, Neb.
The family will receive friends following services on Thursday at the Church.
