Lyle Wood

Lyle Robert Wood, 83, passed away at his home on March 25, 2020 after a long battle with cancer. He was born March 16, 1937 in Joplin MO, the son of Edward Lyle And Bertalee (Roberts) Wood.

Lyle graduated from Baxter Springs High School where he was quarterback of the football team and captain of the basketball team. He graduated from Pittsburg State University with a degree in Chemistry.

He married his high school sweetheart, Roberta “Bobbie” Livingston in 1959. They celebrated their 60th anniversary in June and were together 68 years.

He worked at Eagle Picher Industries, Farmland Industries and the last several years before retirement he was employed in Defense Contracts for the U.S. Government.










He is survived by his wife, Roberta; sons David Wood and Steve Wood; daughter Catherine Smith and husband Mike all from Baxter Springs; four grandchildren, Tori Parsons (Zach Miller), Peyton Smith and Jackson Smith of Baxter Springs and Matthew Smith and wife Lacie of Carl Junction, MO; and one sister, Linda Goodrich and husband Malcolm of Miami, OK.

Lyle was a devoted family man and always put the needs of his wife and children above his own. One of the things he enjoyed most after retiring was volunteering at the Route 66 visitors center in Baxter Springs where he met people from all over the world. He liked woodworking (especially making bird houses) and working crossword puzzles. He loved watching football and was an avid Kansas City Chiefs fan.

He belonged to the First Baptist Church of Baxter Springs. He was a member of the American Chemical Society, the Baxter Springs Historical Society and the Phi Lambda Chi Fraternity in college.

In respect to the current COVID-19 outbreak, no public services are planned at this time. There will be a private family funeral service on Monday, March 30th 2020 at Derfelts Baxter Chapel. Burial will be at Baxter Springs cemetery. Video of the funeral services will be uploaded to our website following the service. Friends and family are welcome to pay their respects on Friday from 9:00 a.m.-4:00 p.m., at Derfelt's Baxter Chapel. Online condolences may be expressed at www.derfeltfuneralhomes.com.

The family wishes to sincerely thank Avalon Hospice for the wonderful care and kindness shown to Lyle during his illness.
