(From Mason-Woodard Mortuary)Roger C. Burris, age 71, of Joplin, Missouri, passed away September 23, 2023, at his home with family by his side.
He was born October 10, 1951, in Collins, Arkansas, to Bill and Alberta (Marshall) Burris. Roger served in the United States Marine Corps where he received a Good Conduct Medal and a National Defense Service Medal. He retired as Postmaster with the United States Postal Service after serving in Miami, Oklahoma; Berryville, Arkansas; Green Forest, Arkansas; and Hartford, Arkansas. He was a member of LifePoint Pentecostal Church. He was passionate about teaching Bible studies and Sunday School classes.
He married JoAnn Ashley on May 18, 1973, in Crossett, Arkansas, and she survives.
Roger is also survived by one son, Roger Burris Jr. (Rod) and wife Diane of Lamar, Missouri; one daughter, Angela Buchanan (Angie) and husband Rev. Frank Buchanan II of Joplin, Missouri; two brothers, Johnny Burris and wife Pat of Vernon, Connecticut; Frankie Burris and wife Norma Jean of Jonesboro, Arkansas; one sister, Carolyn Faye Taylor of Woodlawn, Arkansas; three grandchildren, Makenzie Burris, Franklin Buchanan III, and Ashley Buchanan; three great-grandchildren; “adopted” family, Steve Shumaker, wife Melissa, children Addison (Addie), Avery, and Asher of Joplin, Missouri; and numerous extended family and friends. He is especially missed by his Bloodhound, Penny Girl.
Roger was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers, Billy, Lawrence, Earnest and one sister, Joyce White.
Funeral services will be at 11:00 am on Wednesday, September 27, 2023, at LifePoint Pentecostal Church with Pastor Fred Oates officiating. Burial with military honors will follow at the Carl Junction Cemetery. The family will receive friends at 10:00 am Wednesday prior to the service.
