(From Nelson Funeral Service)Jess D. Green Jr. of Eureka Springs, Arkansas was born in Bartlesville, Oklahoma on June 17, 1924 to Jess D. Green Sr. and Violet May Tayrien. He passed away in Eureka Springs on January 15, 2024.
Jess was raised in Bartlesville and Tulsa, Oklahoma and graduated from the University of Kansas City (currently UMKC) with an A.B. in biology in 1944. He married Elizabeth (Betty) Atchley that year and served as a lieutenant in the United States Navy in both the European and Pacific Theaters during the Second World War when he participated in the invasion of Southern France.
After the war, he enrolled in the George Washington University School of Medicine where he graduated with an M.D. in 1950. After internships and residencies at Kansas City General Hospital and St. John Hospital in Tulsa, Jess founded Pathology Associates in the Price Tower in Bartlesville where he practiced from 1957 to 1978, commuting from Eureka Springs after moving there with Betty in 1972 when she established the Fleece 'N Flax needle arts store. From 1978 until his retirement in 1994, he practiced medicine in Eureka Springs, Joplin, MO, and Bartlesville.
Through his mother, who was an original allottee of the Osage Nation, Jess inherited an Osage headright and took great interest in that aspect of his family history.
Jess was preceded in death by his parents, Betty, his wife of sixty-eight years, his sister Barbara Ann, son Jess III, and daughter-in-law Karen.
He is survived by David D. Green, Brookline, MA, Mary Elizabeth Green, Conway, AR, Mark A. Green, Glenview, IL, and daughter-in-law Mandy Ryan Green, Franklin, TN as well as six grandchildren, two great-grandchildren, two nieces, and a nephew.
